We survived NFTs.
We're surviving this nonsense now, too.
Hang in there, babies.
Capitalism hasn't killed us yet.

*Two years ago, a torrent of raucous laughter erupted from Hegel's tomb, and inexplicably stopped once this announcement was made.*

Lol

@feloneouscat

And herein is why 'the helmsmen' of corporate personages is such a limiting factor. The 'boots on the ground' working on these models have been talking about it for years, lol

โ€œThis is leading to an alarming situation.โ€

This is hardly alarming. Fads vs Trends โ€” fads tend to happen fast, but have a short life. Trends start very slowly and mature slowly.

ChatGPT had fad all over it. LLMs are inherently flawed, customers hate interacting with them, and fail at what they were intended to do: replace human beings.

Even CoSoโ€™s Albert is horrible with history, generating nonsense rather than repeating facts.

@feloneouscat @LiberalLibrarian @MLClark

I'm still laughing at how many advertisements I hear for supposed 'AI models' on the radio. It's hilarious. But, then the target demographic doesn't know that. lol

@MLClark That doesn't surprise me.

People *vastly* underestimate how much LLMs cost to train and run. They are extremely computationally expensive! Applying tricks to lower cost (quantization of vectors, reducing math precision, reducing vector lengths) makes them "dumber." You can run them on lower spec hardware, too, but that makes them much slower.

The "high quality" results people see come at this high cost... and this is why I see the Trough of Disillusionment coming up fast.

@lenaoflune

Yes indeedy - and that's not even including the human cost involved in curating and training these programs, often outsourced and grossly underpaid.

We saw similar with the "revolution" of blockchain processes applied to cryptocurrency Ponzi schemes. And with them the grift of NFTs. LLMs have been a middling tool with sensational market hype to keep Silicon Valley investment flowing from the start.

All smoke & mirrors. We have bigger, corporate "artificial intelligence" to fight.

@MLClark OpenAI could use wafer-scale engines like those from Cerebras and change their operating costs dramatically.

@peterquirk

Oh, I love learning about new-to-me tech. Thanks, Peter! From first glance, we're seeing massive onboarding of this tech in India and UAE, with Abu Dhabi playing a significant collaborative role in taking it to the next level.

Abu Dhabi has a controlling interest in Middle East AIs, so this should be interesting when extended to all the global chatter about AI for military and green-growth optimization.

Will follow this topic more closely. Thanks, Peter!

@holon42

I'm currently working on my Book Club article on KSR's argument for carbon quantitative easing in The Ministry of the Future, so hooooo boy, do I have thoughts about capitalism right now. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

And always.

I genuinely wonder how much less borked my brain-noodle would be if it hadn't been shaped by this system / fellow survivors of this system since birth.

But I'm sure that, if not by capitalism, it would've been borked by something else, so... we focus on treating the damage on hand. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

@AkomoCombine

๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Nah, just change your excuse re: the apocalypse you're prepping for!

@MLClark Better include baseball bats and hockey sticks too- ๐Ÿ˜‚ cant be be too well prepared !
