I've been seeing articles about how American ex-pats are horrified by the TV series Emily in Paris. As the ex-pats tell us they have tried hard to lose their American accents and not be seen as a "typical American" but then along comes Emily to ruin it for them.
But maybe if after living 15 years in a country where you still feel you have to tone yourself down or risk being stereotyped the problem isn't with you but rather the country you decided to move to.
@nblumengarten I feel the same way. I moved to Florida in 2011 but I also refuse to call myself a Floridian. I will always be a New Yorker❤
I have never felt DeSantis has plans to run for Pres in 2024. I could be wrong but I see two obstacles for him. Trump and Trump's supporters would never forgive DeSantis if he won the GOP primary and DeSantis knows this
Also even if DeSantis were elected President he would not be able to control the US the way he is running things here in FL. He wouldn't have a rubber stamp legislature and he knows this as well.
People are saying that indicting Trump may boost his chances of reelection. My reply is that he has a scary chance of being reelected anyway. But even if an indictment could help him in 2024 the prosecutors must go ahead with the indictment.
Not indicting Trump will make a mockery out of our system of justice. And under the new rules if Trump is not indicted why can't every government employee take home top secret documents and refuse to give them back? A President is not a King.
Piers Morgan interviewed Martina Navratilova today. She was talking about her recent cancer diagnosis. Fortunately the treatment is over and it looks like she is going to be fine. What a brave woman because her particular cancer was in two different parts of the body and it was difficult to treat. But it looks like it will be okay and I wish Martina Navratilova the best and the best to everyone dealing with a serious illness. May we one day in the near future find a cure.
@mightymite My Mother always made it on St Patrick's Day: corn beef and cabbage and a boiled potato. She was a great cook and though that particular dish is not my favorite it means alot to me because it reminds me of my Mom who was a wonderful person.
@carmen I didn't know him but I am saddened to hear this and it's scary too. 60 is not that old. I will say a prayer for Lance Reddick and his family.
@JLordanKelly I am more wait and see but I am hoping next week we here about an indictment from the Manhattan DA. The way I see it even if Trump is never convicted, the fact thatvhecwas indicted is going into the history book just like his two impeachments and maybe future generations will know what a dangerous buffoon we had as President.
@Kimmycott I will be voting for Boden in 2024 and hope he wins but I am worried about this election and if Trump gets into the general election all bets are off. He could win. Better therefore to have Youngkin win the nomination and that will ensure that Trump can never be Pres again.
Speculation is that Glenn Youngkin may run for President in 2024. I could live with Youngkin if the alternative is Trump which would be a nightmare.
Granted I don't know much about Youngkin but maybe that's
because he's not making the headlines the way Trump and DeSantis are with some new outrageous act or comment.
Ideally you want candidates in the general election that our nation can live with and Biden and Youngkin would be a normal election the way it used to be.
One of the great things about disconnecting myself from Twitter is that there were quite a few prominent twitter accounts that I strongly disagreed with politically that I used to click on anyway.
I did this hoping that they would tweet something I could agree with but it rarely happened. I'd then end up reading the comments of their fans, tweeting back my response, and before you know it my blood pressure was climbing. I don't miss it.
We must show our support for Ukraine but I am bothered by Merrick Garland's trip there today. It's the second trip he has made. But where has he been these past two years in holding Trump, John Eastman, Rudy Guliani, Mark Meadows etc etc accountable? I am hoping Jack Smith will do something but alot of time has been lost because Garland for whatever reason was and is hesitant to act decisively
What Scott Adams said was very wrong Basically he took the results of a poll asking a ridiculous question and made wide generalizations because of it. He won't apologize and I have a theory that too much success and wealth in life can breed arrogance and narcissism if one is not careful. You begin to think you can never be wrong and if you have your own podcast it's a bad combo.
Nikki Haley is running for President. There was a time when I thought she would have made a good VP or President. Haley was a popular governor of South Carolina. She took down the Confederate Flag in SC. She spoke out against Trump when he first ran. But then Trump got the nomination and she jumped on board and I never understood it. So I am not a Haley fan and yet I hope she can win the GOP nomimation in 2024 so that Trump is out of the running
@Museek It's a big story and I should be paying attention but I am taking a sabbatical from the news. Whether it's the debt ceiling, the balloon you name it, it's always worrisome.
@IrisDallen it would be a great place to start and once you finish with Poe, Dickinson, Christie there are sites on the internet like A Poem A Day or Poetry.org that you can use and the library of course and also collections of books 50 Greatest Short Stories etc. Good luck with the challenge which you can do for however long you like.
If you love to read, as I do, why not committ to the Ray Bradbury Challenge. Here is Ray Bradbury himself explaining it:
"I'll give you a program to follow every night, a very simple program…one poem a night, one short story a night, one essay a night, for the next 1,000 nights"
I am taking the challenge till the end of this year and it's amazing how much I am learning. And poems, short stories and essays of one's choosing are easily available on line at no cost. #CoSoBooks
@CoSoTips it's very nice and I feel bad because I haven't been on Counter Social for awhile and I want to make a plan going forward to post something here each day because this is a great site and what a relief, polite and truthful conversation and no bots or trolls. Thank you!
I live in Florida but will always love New York. I also love to read and will post about books, politics and whatever else catches my fancy.
