Anybody here doing ? I plan on watching "Oppenheimer" either Saturday or Sunday, but I'll give "Barbie" a miss.
I really liked "Fat Man and Little Boy", especially the way Paul Newman portrayed Gen. Grove.

I did indeed go to see last night. I think it's worthwhile. I mentioned Gen. Groves previously. He's portrayed by Matt Damon in this one, and comes across well. The main problem with this film is, when someone compresses 13 years of history into a 3-hour film, some hard choices have to be made about what gets included. I say they could have spent much less time on the security clearance issue.

@KamloopsBob
I can't believe anyone would go see Barbie in a theater when we all know it's a matter of minutes before it shows up on the Disney channel.

@KamloopsBob

Not an Oppenheimer expert but have a basic background knowledge of the Manhattan Project peeps. Need to read "American Prometheus" now, as well.

That said, as a flick I enjoyed the hell out of it -- was a throwback to when Hwood made movies with good actors and a compelling story, however embellished and/or selectively told. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

We saw it as well and it felt a lot like a directors cut. A bit of solid editing and it would have been shorter and less meandering. I know they didn't want to cut any of the guest role big names, but...

Still, a solid film and the Trinity test alone was amazing.

@KamloopsBob All good points. I liked the use of clearance and subsequent congressional hearing as a way to frame the story, allow a good bit of narration, and add drama that isnโ€™t all rah-rah science. To me it was good storytelling that added an important arc; politics end up dictating everything about how we use science and scientists.

@KamloopsBob Hi Bob, have you read this thread on the role Canada played in the creation of the . I was going to post it here, but tonight isn't the time. Maybe at a later date. I saw this evening. Still sorting my reaction.

@KamloopsBob I will probably go see Barbie in the theater (since I don't subscribe to the Disney Channel). I'm going to pass on Oppenheimer and watch that at home where I have subtitles available. I love many Christopher Nolan films. Unfortunately he chooses to make his movies difficult to hear and I've stopped seeing them in the theater because of that.

But it sounds very interesting!

@KamloopsBob I've been going to a Criterion film festival this weekend, so I'm not sure I'm emotionally up to Oppenheimer right now. But I'm thinking about Barbie for the uplift.
