@misslovelymess If you have a table and several blankets you can put them over the table and keep the warmth in a confined area. If you have any tea-light candles you can put them on a large plate and use them for heat. (I know all the tricks.)

If you have sleeping blankets for camping, those are awesome.

Wishing you all the best.

@Annothername @kel The cops were out a lot more than the CPS workers were, but there were always priority 1 emergencies where we had to take kids into custody.

I was out more than I wanted to be. If I could have stayed home all that time I would have.

My kid was taken care of by the wife of the doctor next door because it was too dangerous to take her to the baby-sitter.

One day the doctor ran out to his car to respond to an emergency, jumped in his car and shattered the leather seat.

@kel Stupidity sometimes kills the people who are trying to save your ass because you're running an errand that could be put off.

I'll say this for the majority of people in FBX - they mostly stayed off the roads during those long days when the town was socked in with extreme ice fog.

Some of us were eating cold cereal with water, but hey.

Because I had to go out I stopped at the one open store and shopped for a lot of people at my complex and call them when I got back.

@kel and I gotta say for everyone else who may not listen... going out in deadly cold and severe weather conditions is scary for emergency responders.

Don't like life harder for them. I got lost in the ice fog and crept up to a light and parked my rig next to it - got out and found out it was a bank time/temp so I knew where I was again.

When you can't see the side of the road with foglights on and you drive with one tire in the gravel by the side of the road to save a life get out their way

I gotta agree with @kel that if you're in a badly impacted storm area you need to STAY OFF THE ROADS.

When I lived in FBX I knew people who had to have body parts amputated from frostbite. People died. Once, an entire family.

I wore snow pants, bunny boots/mukluks, heavy fur parka with a ruff, lambskin mittens, muffler, knit hat under the parka hood, loose clothing in layers underneath. NEVER SWEAT! Sweat freezes.

If you're not an emergency responder STAY HOME.

@Floki_ When I lived in FBX I had a circulating pump heater, a battery blanket and an oil pan warmer on my rig because I wanted a function car rather than parking lot art. 😂

I'm glad you have the ability to go out every few hours and run the car long enough to keep the battery alive and the oil from turning into a brick.

I take it this isn't your normal.

@kel No kidding. I was in emergency service response (CPS) in FBX when it was -55° with ice fog. Stay off the road so those who HAVE to go out can do so without worrying about another person in crisis.

Friends are upset about plane cancellations. Better alive at home than dead from icing on the wings. You can visit later because you'll still be alive.

If you lose heat call emergency services to get to a warming shelter.

Lots of people die in weather like this.

@Dogofalltrees controlling BG is often a crapshoot. T2's need to tightly control carbs. T1's have no insulin (or very little) and have different food issues.

I think Bernstein has the best plan for T1s. It's draconian, but it works.

That said: get an injury and BG goes up. Get the sniffles and BG goes up. Do everything perfectly and BG goes up - or crashes. Exercise? Gotta check BG all the time. Keep a glucose tab around just in case. Brittle diabetic? Even worse.

I got curious about this post thing. So I got a throwaway addy and signed up. From what I can see it looks more like the bluebird but it's all about making money.

I've not posted. If there's a news story there's a fee.

I can go to AP and Reuters for free. Why should I pay there? Why should I want to tip someone for posting a photo of their dog?

I'm still poking around a little, but I don't see what's so great about it.

Tons better here, IMO.

@CaliZaybak Betcha if Tucker was put under oath (as is happening with Dominion) he'd admit that he was lying his ass off for ratings.

@Dogofalltrees @kel Yeah, insulin is crazy expensive. It shouldn't be that way. Its nuts because it's not that expensive to make. That said, your private insurance must suck when it comes to medication.

I'm very fortunate to have a platinum plan for meds as a part of my retirement medical from State of Alaska.

@Dogofalltrees @kel Whether you have the receipt isn't important as long as you report. I assume the pharmacy techs know you. Unless you paid cash, there's a record of a transaction for the insulin at the pharmacy on your credit card and THEY have to keep track of their sales of insulin.

@Dogofalltrees @kel you must get the very basic insulin. So much of what is out there these days is in pen form with mixtures.

I take a twice daily injectable (not insulin) which is extremely expensive and available by prescription only. It's a pen with removable needles.

@Dogofalltrees - Call immediately because if yours was not cold-chained there may be others with the same problem who don't get the same testing. Someone could die.

@kel @Dogofalltrees

Kel, a cold-chain is where a medication must be maintained in a cold environment (refrigerated) or they lose the ability to do what they need to do. Labels don''t matter.

When I get my meds shipped they come in 3 vials (3 months) in an insulated box with ice packs and are air freighted. I'm notified when they are to be delivered so I'm home to get them in the house and into the fridge. They can't freeze, either.

@Dogofalltrees Yes, this is incredible serious. Call the pharmacist ASAP. The cold-chain wasn't maintained somewhere so it isn't working. I don't use insulin but I do use a medication that requires a cold-chain and I know what you're talking about.

Yeah, the high BG can exhaust you and cause all kinds of damage to your body not to mention killing you if it gets too high. I assume you're doing a lot of testing, right? As in Bernstein type testing?

@WestofMars One of the dogs turned up a local rescue group - very pregnant. They couldn't catch the larger dog. We're hoping someone else could. If not, that dog may be dead by now.

How to cope when there's a frozen pipe in the house. More coffee and no one dies...
