Followup to that COVID scare at the contra dance weekend: we all tested twice again, nobody tested positive. We kept on masking for indoor group activities and finished the weekend as planned. We're asked to report if any of comes down with it this week.

The person who tested positive wasn't very sick, because they were vaccinated. The whole experience shows the value of vaccines, masking, testing, and community.

Threescore and ten today. Which means every day beyond this is a gift.
But of course all the previous days were gifts too, so nothing's really changed.

Contra dance weekend put on hold in midcourse due to a dancer testing positive foe COVID. All sent back to their cabins to test -- we'll see what comes next.
2022 couldn't leave without just one more "fuck you."

I want the world to know that the standard 1:4 ratio (by volume) of sugar to water in syrup for hummingbirds is 1:5 by weight, and weight is what counts in everything but booze.

And if hummingbirds are still coming to the feeder, keep on filling it. They know when to migrate (if they do -- some don't), they don't need an empty feeder to tell them.

Also, let the damn syrup cool before filling the feeder, unless shattered feeders and syrup on the floor are your idea of fun.

Knocked out of the Little Drummer Boy Challenge six days before Christmas. By KING-FM, of all people. Fifteen minutes ago they were finishing up Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, and now this. No wound hurts worse than a stab in the back.

A couple of firsts yesterday: used an aliquot in an old spice jar I'd painstakingly marked in 10cm intervals to time the bulk ferment just right, and used one of my new bannetons -- and had success, a pain au levain bâtarde with good shape, good crumb, good taste!

And then I noticed the aliquot still sitting there in the jar waiting to be re-incorporated with the dough. Maybe if I mash it out thin enough I can turn it into a mini-pita.
