@FireMonkey @InvaderGzim @EileenKCarpenter @voltronic Beanie Babies I think is the only appropriate here. None of the others were touted as "an investment." They were fads, certainly, same with the hula hoop. But Beanie Babies were sold by some as an actual retirement plan.

They gave them to their kids, then didn’t let them play with them. They had to leave the tags on and not let them show wear.
Our kids played the hell out of theirs, and had a more fun than any investment value would have beed worth. (Though I always wondered if that early Ally Alligator, with the tag that said “Ty” but not “Beanie Baby” would have been worth something.)
