If conservatives' opposition to abortion was truly based on a concern for the potential suffering of the fetus, they would have looked for ways to make sure that most abortions take place as early as possible, before the development of a brain or nerves, and preferably in the first days when the embryo is an undifferentiated ball of cells.
In fact, they've done everything possible to delay abortions and make them occur as late as possible.
It has never been about the fetus.
