I love cover versions of songs. It's really interesting to hear other people's interpretations of stuff. I do a bit of it myself (may post something one of these days), and I usually start by checking out what other people have done.

This is one of my favourite versions of Sympathy For The Devil. The recording itself isn't brilliant but the energy and talent shines through youtube.com/watch?v=C16z-DBJvP

Johnny Cage and the Voodoo Groove were a band I first heard on a BBC tv show, called (I think) Britain's Best Band. Loved them on there, but they sadly don't seem to be active now. One of the standouts on TV was a cover they did of Toma Waits - Jockey Full of Bourbon. Here's a bit of it, with a snippet of Sweet Dreams thrown in for good measure

Some years afterwards, I also found this, which seems to be set with most of the members of the band playing at the Wales Millennium Centre. It's a little different, but I really like this too

Okay, last one for now, I think. You might well have heard of this already. It's one where I love the cover but I love the original just as much - they've both got a similar vibe but I appreciate the fairly subtle differences in both

The Black Crowes - Hard to Handle:

And the Otis Redding original: youtube.com/watch?v=6TQIKw19Xj

This one's sort've... semi-famous? Is that a thing? Anyway, I really like it

Spiderbait - Black Betty
(ahd to delete and redraft because I didn't include the original video which is a thing of beauty πŸ˜€ )

@66ALW99 this is one of my favorites. Gone too soon. Such a gorgeous talent. πŸ’œ

@JennaKat One of my favourite vocalists, since the Soundgarden days. I generally don't get too emotional over celebrity deaths but watching videos of Chris and his daughter Toni singing just after I heard of his death was just.. 😒

@66ALW99 I get teary every time I see something with them together. She and her mom did a special on his birthday on Sirius xm and I drove around crying listening to the whole thing. Celebrity deaths don’t often hit me so, but his definitely did.

@66ALW99 That happens more often than not, But its not often that the writer of the song refuses to perform it again after a remake was done.

@66ALW99 Paul Simon said it's theirs now. I've likened it to S&G's being the warning, Disturbed's is the rage it wasn't heeded.

@Reuven That's lovely to hear, it's great when the original artist appreciates the cover like that :D

@66ALW99 I have always been a fan of when a group will punk out a pop song; or a super group in this case. Here is one of my favs

@JackSprack If you're liking punky versions of songs, here's one you might like. I first heard this in college, years ago on a friend's dodgy underground CD. It was only about 20 years later that I found the same version again, thankfully on YouTube, so it can be shared - Stiff Little Fingers covering Bob Marley's Johnny Was:

@66ALW99 The live covers are always a welcome treat!!

@JackSprack Did you see the Chris Cornell covers of Billy Jean and nothing Compares 2U posted earlier? Not punky, but live and pretty darn good, imo!

@66ALW99 Seen them and love them both. A talent that had so much more to give to this world and he left us too soon.

Here is another one of my fav's from the Foo Fighters

youtube.com/watch?v=NxlUNb1H3L

@JackSprack had to look up the original first, I don't know Prince's stuffthat well, but yeah, the cover's pretty great!

Thing I've noticed with a lot of Prince's music is, it's like there's some potentially great out and out rock stuff there, but it's like there's sort've 'musical bondage' element - there where it feels like it's deliberately kept a bit restrained

That probably sounds weirder than I would've liked πŸ˜‚

@66ALW99 Prince didn't like that cover, as Dave explained. So much so, that it was agreed that when the Foo album came out, that cover track was not allowed on the US release.

@JackSprack I respect Prince's music, but tbh, from what I've heard, it sounds like the man himself was kind've a dick.

@66ALW99 πŸ˜‚ For sure - but, he was an artist dick, very much engrossed in his art and music; those kind of folks get a pass.

Couple of things I highly recommend you check out. 2 of them are clips from Dave Chappelle show of him doing Prince. Quick google will get you there

The last was an episode of Mike Judge Tales from the Tour Bus - Morris Day and the Time

@JackSprack thanks, I'll take a look later. Though Chappelle seems to be another one that turns out to have been a bit of a dick πŸ˜‚
