@Nimthiriel
I am baffled. What was that? 🤔
I’m too fucking logical in world that makes no sense.
@see_the_sus
Me as well. That post was so poorly worded.
@Nimthiriel
@see_the_sus @Nimthiriel
I need a little brain cleanse. 😉
Supertramp -- The Logical Song
@Krysdammit @see_the_sus @Nimthiriel Listened to the whole album a week or so ago. Forgot how good it is!
@John_Ripley
Not a bad song on it nor on "Crime of the Century" either.😉 @see_the_sus @Nimthiriel
@see_the_sus @Krysdammit A deadname is the name by which a trans Persian was known before they transitioned. To “deadname” someone is to refer to them by that name.
aaaaah. so in other words, "my old/previous name." Interesting use of "dead." Definitely is final.
So it's only used by trans Persians?
@see_the_sus
Trans person.
It's ash in my mouth every time I have to use my kid's deadname.
@Shelter
Thank you for letting me know. Did you see the original post though? I have no idea what they were talking about or referring to. @see_the_sus @Nimthiriel
@see_the_sus @Nimthiriel @Krysdammit I think that was a bad autocorrect.
Trans people use it to refer to our previous names for a variety of reasons (I posted earlier on this thread about my journey on it, going from "given name" to "deadname").
It's often a painful reminder of the Persona we'd created to protect ourselves prior to coming out, and the term makes it clear the name shouldn't be used as it refers to an entity that no longer exists.
@lenaoflune
TY 4 telling me this. That was such a poorly worded post that I fixated on another part of it. The county's name which no longer exists. Thought that they were complaining about their name which might be in their native language from that country.
We see what irritates us and use that for context. I too have trouble with my name because it is foreign here.🤷♀️
My eldest is trans, never occurred to me that that was what this person was referencing
@see_the_sus @Nimthiriel
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus I have a foreign name too. Ultimately started going by a different one because I got fed up with it being mispronounced by anyone reading it.
@Nimthiriel
Mine is common enough in the English world, pronounced the English way, which I detest.
Pronouncing it my way isn't hard, but ppl need to remember. Too much trouble for them to do such a simple thing.
I’m so sorry that people cause such grief for you with your names. I love learning to pronounce names I’m unfamiliar with and consider it a fun educational challenge.
@see_the_sus
I love learning to pronounce names the way ppl want them pronounced. It makes my friend so much more unique. 🤗
I had one dip insist on pronouncing it with a very long ee sound when I insisted Krys was just fine. "Oh but it's such a pretty name! I Love the name Christeeeeeena." 🤦♀️
@Nimthiriel @lenaoflune
Good gawd, that’s so disrespectful. 😡 Who gives a fuck how YOU like it, ya dumb git!
@see_the_sus
For some reason this person wanted to be my friend. We aren't. 😂 I wonder why? If they don't listen and steamroll you over such a simple, basic, thing, then they are a bully.
@Nimthiriel @lenaoflune
@Krysdammit So how exactly do you want your name pronounced? I'm only typing it, but would like to know the sound. @see_the_sus @Nimthiriel @lenaoflune
@poemblaze
The r is trilled, both ys are short i as in tin. The next to last syllable gets the accent. 🙃
Kris TIN ah
You can throw Krystyna into Google Translate and select Polish, it sounds pretty good.😉
@Krysdammit Hello Kristina! @see_the_sus @Nimthiriel @lenaoflune
@poemblaze
Hello Matt!👋
@see_the_sus @Nimthiriel @lenaoflune
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus mine is Dunja. Anglos never read it right.
@Nimthiriel
My first instinct would be to read it as Doon-yah, accent on the first syllable. How far off am I?🤷♀️
@lenaoflune @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus Correct! =D If you type it into the Bing translator and push the button to hear it said, that gives the most accurate pronunciation I've heard in one of those translation thingies. The google one gave me something disturbing :/
@Nimthiriel
I didn't try a translator. I went with what I thought it should sound like.
Most Slavs pronounce the J as the English Y. Our J sounds like the dge in judge. That sound usually begins a word and is rarely found in the middle.
@lenaoflune @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus If I'm being really finicky, there is also a difference in the 'oo' sound that the 'u' makes between Slavic and English speakers. In English there's almost a w at the end of the 'oo', and how pronounced it is. And the D is more tapped in the Slavic pronunciation than the English one. (I spent a long time figuring out my Australian accent; can you tell? 😂 )
@Nimthiriel
That drove my parents nuts. Vowels start off sounding like one thing and ending up with a different sound at the end.
I figured that the first syllable would sound like "dune".
Last time I was in Poland my cousin mocked me for how I didn't differenciate between the T and D sounds.😂
@lenaoflune @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus My spouse finds it hilarious that when I speak Croatian after not having spoken it for a while, my vowels have a very broad Australian accent 😂 But after an hour or two in Zagreb the last time we visited, I was speaking like a local that had never left.
I do miss that city.
@Nimthiriel
I've heard that it's beautiful there. My bro visited Croatia with his wife a few years ago.
My Ukrainian student I meet with on line is also learning Polish since that's where she lives now.
She shows off now and then with a new difficult word or phrase & I respond in Polish. She finds my Canadian accent hysterical. Well, I have lived here for 64 yrs this Oct.🙄
@lenaoflune @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus Oh yes. The various regions are also quite different from each other because of the geography. My one regret is I wasn't organised enough to go for a swim in Dubrovnik.
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus But I mean, we're both Slavic and Dunja is a slavic name, so I'd kind of expect you to get it right ;)
@Nimthiriel
Is it short for a longer name? I've never come across it before.
It's lovely though, I like it.🤗
Just ran it through Bing translate and it sounds exactly the way I would pronounce it. Auto detect says that it's German tho.🤷♀️
@lenaoflune @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @lenaoflune @see_the_sus No, its literal meaning is 'quince'. And thank you 😊 I'm quite fond of it myself, and it makes me sad that I barely ever get to use it.
@Nimthiriel @Krysdammit @see_the_sus There's a reason I put my pronunciation in my profile :)
I've heard len-AH, LAY-nah, and the very common LEE-nah (as in Headey). But I use the Finnish pronunciation of LEN-ah ("as if it had two n's").
I always tell people I don't mind, but it definitely makes me happy when someone goes the extra mile to remember my preference.
@lenaoflune
Would you believe me if I told you that I've always read your name the Finnish way? 🙏
My name is Krystyna; Chris TIN (as in can😂) ah
I cringe when I hear the long drawn out eeeee-nah in the middle. It hurts my ears. Screechy.
@Nimthiriel @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @Nimthiriel @see_the_sus Of course I would believe you :)
Thank you for sharing your pronunciation! I thought it was "tin" instead of "teen" but I wasn't sure :)
@lenaoflune
I've always read your name as Len-nah of Lunah 😂 It's poetic.🤗
@Nimthiriel @see_the_sus
@Krysdammit @Nimthiriel @see_the_sus Yes! ❤️ That is definitely the sort of thing I was going for :)
@lenaoflune
💜 It's lyrical.🎶
@Nimthiriel @see_the_sus
And here I am in my wee little corner getting annoyed when people call me Sue, Susie, or Susanna.
@see_the_sus
Names are very personal things. If we can't stand what we hear when some one calls us by our name, then whatever comes after doesn't really matter.🤷♀️
This is why I'm so respectful of ppl's choice of pronoun.
If THIS can drive me nuts, then how much more hurtful is it to use the wrong pronoun repeatedly, purposefully, if not to inflict pain?
@lenaoflune @Nimthiriel
@Krysdammit @see_the_sus @lenaoflune @Nimthiriel What I don't get about pronouns is you only use them to refer to someone in the third person. If I address you, I use your name not your pronoun. So you can never observe whether I respect (and recall!) your choice. You can observe whether I respect the choices of other people.
Things would be a whole lot easier if the language has no gender for pronouns. It.
@walterbays
Many things are gendered needlessly. 🤷♀️
Pronouns are important even so. If I don't watch which I use in reference to certain ppl, then I can slip up in person.
You are right, it's a matter of respect.
Tonight I had my eldest and their husband over for dinner.
He referred to my child by their preferred pronouns during dinner.
It's unnatural to only refer to someone by their name in a flowing conversation. It's stilted and awkward.
@see_the_sus @lenaoflune @Nimthiriel
@Krysdammit @see_the_sus @lenaoflune @Nimthiriel
"It's unnatural to only refer to someone by their name in a flowing conversation. It's stilted and awkward."
Ah, now I get it, thanks. How dumb of me to forget about group social situations, as though I've been denied such situations the last few years. Those situations are also where forgetting the chosen pronoun would be most embarrassing for both parties.
I still think singular plural is a more important distinction to retain than gender.😥
@walterbays
I thought that at one time as well. Since then I've learned that a small amount of awkwardness for me, is less of a burden than what they experience just by being.
If I can make someone more comfortable, why wouldn't I?
At first I looked at it like this. If someone is named William, but upon introduction asks to be called Bill, we have to remember that specific person as Bill.
So we have to remember ppl as they and them.
It's not that difficult.
@see_the_sus @lenaoflune @Nimthiriel
@lenaoflune @see_the_sus @Krysdammit Bloody autocorrect istg. Sorry about that.
@see_the_sus
I think that's a typo and supposed to read as person. That's the problem with the original post. It's worded really badly. Who knows what they meant?
@Nimthiriel
@Krysdammit @see_the_sus @Nimthiriel I assumed it was "persons" but Otto Kirikt changed it because he suuuuuuxxxxxx....
@Krysdammit @see_the_sus I knew what they meant, but I’ve become used to figuring out where the punctuation is supposed to go from transcribing lawyers speaking, and they really can go on and on and on
@Nimthiriel
What can I say. English is not my first language, this person claimed to be Slavic as well, I tried to read more into it than there may have been and apparently missed the most important part. For us word order doesn't matter, we get context in other ways. How we word concepts of time is also different.
@see_the_sus
It isn’t? 😵 I had no clue whatsoever cause your grammar and sentence structure is better than us native-English folk.
@Nimthiriel
@see_the_sus
Tyvm. I've also been told that my speach pattern irl is very proper and stilted?😂
This is a wee example of what my ppl have to change from;
John loves Mary =
Jan kocha Maryje
Maryje kocha Jan
Kocha Maryje Jan.
The word order doesn't matter.
Here it is in reverse;
Mary Loves John. =
Maryja kocha Jana
Jana kocha Maryja
Kocha Jana Maryja.
We ask the question of who loves whom in the same way, word order isn't important to us.🤷♀️
@Nimthiriel
@see_the_sus @Krysdammit English isn’t my first language either. I had to learn all the rules from scratch.
@Nimthiriel
I'm still learning. Can't see that stopping anytime soon.😉 😂
@see_the_sus
@see_the_sus
Maybe because the country no longer exists in that form.
It is now 5 countries. Perhaps they have problems with their given name sounding too foreign? I dunno, trying to sort out a poorly written post is making us read things into nonsense.🤷♀️
@Nimthiriel
