Besides putting the driver next to the curb instead of in traffic when they exit their vehicle, are there other practical advantages to driving on the left side of a road in England, for example? Asking because I’ve always just accepted it and never wondered why.

History lesson:
Before cars, when the horse was king, thise who could afford to, would carry a sword.
Being that most folk would hse their right hand for fighting off an attacker, riding on the left gave more freedom of movement.
The convention was so prevalent that eventually it became law as more and more roads were built and when cars came along, the same law applied. Cars therefore retained a right hand driving position for improved visibility when driving on the left.
