there are hairsticks for this as well. i don't have any but i've considered using particularly pointy hairpins as self-defense if needed.

My hair accessories suddenly feel inadequate.
My degree was in clothing design. I used to have to walk home from the tailoring lab at night so I carried my seam ripper open in my hand in case I needed something for self-defense.
It's a nasty thing to poke someone with.
My mom said that in the 60s, the "bad girls" in high school hid razor blades in their bouffant hairdos.
