Calling all CoSO nature types. Anyone know what sort of nest this is??
Itโs growing on a tree outside my window and has a couple of wasps flying around it. Is it a wasp nest?
Last year this time this tree got infested and eaten to bits by September by what looked like silk worms to me.
Should I get a broom destroy it?? ๐๐คช
@haggardmom75 @TheAbbotTrithemius I was going to say gypsy moth caterpillar tent.
@haggardmom75 @TheAbbotTrithemius if it's gypsy moths a broom will just spread them soon no leaves on that tree. We blast hose em down or light them on fire.
@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75 @TheAbbotTrithemius
I'd personally nip those branches off, put the nest somewhere safe then burn it or spray with insecticide.
@cephalopie @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
I donโt have a pole nipper and knowing me I will fall out the window. ๐ค
(I donโt think the fall would kill me, especially if I landed on that outdoor couch of my neighbors... but it would sure hurt!)
Maybe the Super has something to nip it.
@cephalopie @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Can I just aim pesticide at it and send a stream of it that way..
@TheAbbotTrithemius @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Yes, except the next itself will stop the stream. I would spray it , knock it about with a stick/broom handle and spray again.
@TheAbbotTrithemius @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75 not next, nest
@TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75
No, just pour a lil vodka on the tent and light it. If the tree is green it will be fine.
@TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75 The idea of cutting it out and burning it seems ideal but for some reason in my family vodka seems to cure everything? ๐ค
@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Drink the vodka before or after lighting it up??
@TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75 one swig before pour light stand back, next swig. Now put away. Lol
@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75
What, you're not going to take a big mouthful and spray it out while setting it on fire?
Well, THAT'S pretty disappointing.
@mcfate @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75
Is this one of those 'things that you can say at Frat parties and during sex' things?
@killingfloorman @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75
Chicks dig fire-breathers, man.
@mcfate @killingfloorman @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Fire-breathers are hawt.
@TheAbbotTrithemius @mcfate @killingfloorman @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Definitely tent caterpillars or gypsy moths. I grew up with periodic infestations of these in our trees, and remember my grandfather burning them with a torch (Paleo style; not butane).
@voltronic @mcfate @killingfloorman @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Thanks, But thatโs going to be a problem. Itโs about 8 feet from my window. ๐ฌ
@TheAbbotTrithemius @voltronic @killingfloorman @Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
"WHAT'S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN?"
๐ถ
@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @haggardmom75
Will they do gypsy shows?
@TheAbbotTrithemius @haggardmom75 The caterpillars are actually really pretty. I think thats how they get their name? Idk
There are caterpillars who camp out with tents?? Wut?
Not a wasp nest, wasps don't spin silk. Tent caterpillars, perhaps.
Iโve known some silk spinning wasps in my day... ymmv..
It's entomology's mileage that's at issue here. The only wasps that spin silk are parasitoids. They don't make nests.
@TheAbbotTrithemius looks like caterpillars
@TheAbbotTrithemius Tent caterpillars maybe?
