@th3heal3r
How is the security of it?

Is an antivirus program, malware detection, etc. necessary?

@Jinqs Most modern 's are locked down pretty well, though there are usually a few things you can do after install. (just google it)

I personally think it's a good idea to run anti virus etc on nix, not just because there are a few *nix virus' out there, but to stop you infecting windows machines if you pass an infected document on for example.

@Jinqs

Security is a relative thing.
What are you going to do ?
For every day internet use, any major distribution of Linux, will be more secure that any other operating system.

That said: again Security is a relative.

So more detail might be needed.

@corlin I'm mostly concerned with online security while playing games like MMOs and things like that.

@Jinqs
Ok.
Great.
I am not a gamer.

But as I understand the threats, these come mostly from the game you are running, its servers, and the people running these servers. Also the people you are playing with.

These threats are present no matter what operating system you are using.

Yet .... In general Linux, will patch, sooner, and more frequently than other systems. So if you can, and you have a choice, run the game under Linux.

@Jinqs

antivirus isn't really a thing on *nix

as for malware, most likely delivery mechanism will be via web, keep your browser up to date, and use some extensions to help keep bad stuffs out, a lil uBlock Origin goes a long way, but there's a plethora of em if ya wanna go deeper

I tend to do my heavy security at the internet edge, to reduce capability requirements on individual hosts

// @th3heal3r

@Jinqs Actually quite a few people that hang in and use linux / unix. Ask away if you have any questions.

@th3heal3r @Jinqs

OK. What's the average rainfall in the Orinoco River basin?

@electrikmonk rainfall varies considerably throughout. The northeast trade winds blow parallel to the coastal districts without losing much of their moisture, in some places leaving less than 20 inches (510 mm) of precipitation per year. Areas lying behind topographic barriers also get little rain, while windward slopes generally are well watered. In some regions enough rain falls to support a lush jungle growth, and in others there is enough for a true rain forest (selva). @th3heal3r @Jinqs

@Jinqs

"Soaking in it."

Why ? You got questions ?
Just ask away !

@Museek I was thinking of starting with that distro, but I really want a distro that is geared more toward gaming. I was looking into PopOS.

@Jinqs I'd like to add; you may want to google some things like Netfilter, iptables, nftables, and hardening or Securing Linux

Those, I suspect could help to secure Your system when gaming.

@Museek

@Jinqs @Museek Never used PopOS but have used playonlinux on ubuntu to run everything I wanted to play. You can check if your games are supported here

playonlinux.com/en/supported_a

@Jinqs

Ubuntu 20.04 running on Oracle VM on W10. I dont run any anti virus or other security apps on the Ubuntu. Had this setup for half a year with zero problems
