I'm sorry but who didn't see this coming? I'm definitely not a fan of Meta or any of its spawn but frankly, they're commercial operations. They're not the ones usually posting news content, it's their users. I suspect that most of the views of news organizations are driven from sites like Facebook. Let's see how that works out.

@Cdn_Skeptic_Wm oh no … how will I get my Canadian news now .,..
probably like I used to before Facebook
Or the numerous news orgs apps
For the amount of “ news” Meta likes to think they’re known for … they are mostly know for their silos and misinformation

@LtMcDies @Cdn_Skeptic_Wm there is something to be said for the benefit of news aggregation... for millions of people, Facebook IS the internet and the news they see there is the only news they ever see. I can't see the benefit in turning that off, all for profit that news orgs were never gonna see to begin with.

@dietotaku @Cdn_Skeptic_Wm once upon a time radio was where Canadians got their news too
The trouble with Facebook as news aggregator is right beside CBC is Epoch Times or dr Mercola latest vitamin push.
All being considered “ news”
Only a few years after the Cambridge Analytics mess we’ve all forgotten
Facebook history is that of a manipulative corporate actor no better than Musk Xwitter
They may be convenient that’s all

@Cdn_Skeptic_Wm only bad things will come of the increased paywalling of legitimate information. this law was a bad move on Canada's part. newspapers used to sit on racks by the door in grocery stores, nobody charged me to sit down and skim it while I waited for my husband to do the shopping. if they could function on those margins, they can function being linked on social media.

@Cdn_Skeptic_Wm Facebook has basically inserted themselves in between news organizations and advertisers, and take the lion's share of that revenue. They've forced the industry to feel dependent on them. And for years, FB has not been driving traffic to news sites, it has been showing the articles in their entirety on their site, so that the source doesn't get the traffic.

I'm presuming Canadians will get their news other ways.

@Cdn_Skeptic_Wm Facebook has basically been stealing traffic from news orgs, and holding them hostage. They often embed the entire article in their page, and the original source doesn't even get the traffic, or people who view other pages on the site.
They basically have inserted themselves between news orgs and advertisers, and siphoned off the bulk.
When asked to negotiate fairer terms, they said they were taking their ball and going home.
Those news orgs must evolve or die.
