PSA - https://counter.social's per month running costs are now at more than 400% above the cost from a month ago. We're having to upgrade our infrastructure faster than the rate of PRO users upgrading.
This place is 100% crowd-powered by its users, not advertisers. Please consider going PRO if you can. If you can't - that's okay too.
Direct PRO upgrade link below, desktop browser users can use the 'COSO PRO' link from the main righthand navigation.
For the love of Grace Hopper, y'all make sure you're putting some coins in the machine if you're going to play.
I don't know the depth of J's pockets or generosity, but platform hosting costs are an endless source of pain that only get worse as this community grows.
CoSo has wares, if you have coin.
I didn't expect I'd be able to get any writing done while sick, but I'm up to 24,404 words now for #NaNoWriMo !
Not all veterans are male, of course. Clayman Smith shared this shot of his mom, Lurlene Yardley, in uniform as a cartographer at the Pentagon in Washington during WW II. Lurlene was born in Jacksonville and raised in Port Arthur. Clayman says she was a great mom and a lot of fun. And "Lurlene," of course, is a great Texas name!
The Escazu Agreement, adopted in Costa Rica in March 2018, is a legally binding international treaty that aims to promote transparency in environmental decision-making. The first of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean, it also includes protections for environmentalists like Carreno — a welcome development in one of the most dangerous countries in the world for land defenders. #politics #environment
My grandfather did recon photography in WW2. My grandmother's brothers were on the ground in Europe. They taught me that bigotry invites tyranny. That diversity is necessary because weakness is magnified when everyone is the same since no one is perfect.
They had misguided views, but they also hoped my generation would do better. They didn't want us to settle for what they gave us. They wanted us to show gratitude by making it even better.
From what I've seen so far, CoSo mostly doesn't care if you stay or not when you first get here. You are welcomed, and if you want to be part of the community, that's great!
Nobody's begging you to stay if it's not for you, though. Be suspicious of platformd that do that. They have motivations that are not about what will make you happy.
And there's no need to demand that CoSo convince you that this is THE place to be. When other platforms do that, it's been part of trying to convince you to be there so you can be the product sold to advertisers, and contributing to the number that attracts investors...who want you to be sold to advertisers.
So it's kind of like telling somebody, "These people's house we're going to? Do NOT say 'hello', try to shake hands, or call anybody by their name." But that's all they know for "properly" greeting someone when you visit them.
It's also on us new people to ask, "Okay, how do I greet them?" Long time CoSoNauts are offerings information.
I also understand some of the other new people may not really grok that yet, even when told there's no algorithm. The Algorithm doesn't just exist in the bird app. Social media has just been getting us used to "engage properly in order to be seen".
Some people don't know any other way. By the time they got on IG or Twitter that was already how it was.
I'm doing CoSo (CoSoing?) on mobile, so things like pinning columns aren't happening for me. And I'm actually good with that. I like hanging out in the firehose, then checking my mentions and people I follow now and then.
I love just being able to interact and not having to worry about doing it in a way that will play The Algorithm in my favor. 'Cause...no algorithm!
Tips for the Neuro-kin and fellows:
If you are having sight issues with the website on a browser, there is Darkreader.org which will allow you to adjust the viewing settings for your sight needs.
If you have issues keeping up with reading on here, dyslexic/dyscalcula, enable PreCog, it's amazing for reading and reading comprehension.
Last but not least, Ostrich Mode is great for clearing up the clutter on the screen with all the tickers, trackers, and audio feeds. It's a lot more orderly.
Screw discounted sporting event tickets, food discounts (gee, could ya spare it?) and other 'feel-good' nonsense coming from corporations. You people want to help? Fine, here's what we veterans need:
- Suicide prevention care
- Educational programs at reduced or no cost
- Jobs
- Job training
- Housing
- Help with utilities
- Help with groceries
Don't make us your 'flavour of the month' and use us to salve your miserable consciences. Did you know 20 veterans every single day commit suicide?
Someone called us the PBS of social media. I think that's an apt description.
"CounterSocial is made possible by users like you."
The lines are done now. I still think this looks weird. We'll see what happens as color is added. #CoSoArt
