@voltronic Have you heard of Adam Neely? He is a provocative youtuber music theory analyst.. 3 years ago he posted a tube-essay about music theory and whiteness. Now, as a brown ovaried student at a conservative german music college.. I can attest to many of his points. My preferred major, jazz, was called "animal music" by a renowned professor there. I graduated cum-laude.. anyhow, much info/discussion resides here.. the link: youtu.be/Kr3quGh7pJA

Watching now. It's quite interesting, and I agree that what we teach as "music theory" is rather narrow and not very diverse. The quote from Alex Ross nails it.

I would love to see a complete overhaul that is far more diverse, and to stop spending so much time on figured bass unless you're going to be a Baroque specialist.

I'm very familiar with that AP Theory test, and I would bounce that out right away.

@JazzCrafter
Good to see that he went to West African concepts. I took a Ghanaian drumming and dance course, and there are things that just cannot be actually notated in a European "music theory" system.
