Pro-Trump activists are using Jim Crow-era laws to disenfranchise voters. Unfortunately, while the The Georgia NAACP, Black Voters Matter Fund, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and other frontline organizations have sued over these challenges, the U.S. Justice Department is, so far, nowhere to be seen.

And all of this is remarkable because until about a year and a half ago, I was reading about four books a *year*.

I was a reader as a kid, and through school, but...

- Untreated sleep apnea meant that any time I relaxed, I nodded off. By the time I had it treated, I was out of the habit.
- Pain in my forearms, wrists, and hands (too much time on the computer) made it hard to hold a book. One reason I LOVE my eReader.
- Streaming is a time suck

I'm *delighted* I've made reading my #1 hobby.

Look up your state in this infographic, and sharpie the hotline to the back of your hand.

If you see *anything* *ANYTHING* that makes you or anyone else feel unwelcome, intimidated, threatened - don't doubt yourself and CALL IMMEDIATELY.

Sharpie these words to the inside of your arm:

"Give me a provisional ballot with receipt as required by law."

If you are told there is a problem with your registration and you are turned away from voting - SAY THESE EXACT WORDS TO THE ELECTION CLERK.

❗ Stay at the polling place ❗
❗ Do not leave until you have are given a provisional ballot and a receipt, with instructions on how to track your ballot ❗

Currently reading:

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (digital)

Enter Boogeyman (physical, short story collection)

Might also start an audiobook. Maybe Fingersmith. Which is almost 24 hours. Or John Gardner's Grendel.

October reading stats

22 titles
3,758 pages
10 titles 110 pages and over

More print books than usual.
Apparently I didn't read any non-fiction.

No five stars for me this month, but several four+.

House of Leaves
It Would be Night in Caracas
Bury Your Gays
A Botanical Daughter
Patricia Wants to Cuddle

And of course the Swamp Thing volumes and the 1818 Frankenstein.

Thinking of starting a reading blog. House of Leaves would be a fantastic book to start with.

Carmina Burana is a fantastic piece to experience performed live.

I volunteered as an usher when my college symphony performed it, and got to watch it three times.

They had the full symphony, a full choir, a small children's choir, a quartet of tenors, and the soloists.

While O Fortuna is the strongest standalone piece, there are several other fun moments like the drinking song, and Dulcissime, where the soprano's high note is basically an orgasm.

Canvassers for Elon Musk’s America PAC Were Fired and Stranded in Michigan After Speaking Out
A dozen Black canvassers were tricked, threatened, and driven in seatless U-Haul vans. They were fired after WIRED reported on their plight—some without full pay or a way back home.

@mcfate

I definitely enjoyed The Ritual movie. I have yet to read or watch No One Gets Out Alive--but now I definitely will.

@mcfate

Nevill is excellent.

I can also recommend The Reddening and All the Fiends of Hell.

He includes a good segment on Arab Americans and Palestine.

@FrankCannon

You can't beat people into abandoning their beliefs and loyalties. They only double down. And I think that Netanyahu and his government know that.

So given that, it's apparent that they want people to double down. Which will lead to more conflict and instability--which must be their goal.

Because nothing in their approach can lead to peace.
