@Novels56 I was six when I saw the movie version of "My Side Of The Mountain", where a 12 year old goes off to live in the woods alone (with his dad's permission?!). It became my favorite book, I started learning about backyard foraging, and to this day I have a wilderness survival manual as bathroom reading for funsies. I'm shocked I don't know more, probably because I've always also thought air conditioning is nice, but please ase don't tempt me.
@Novels56 I recently found out it's a trilogy now, it's waiting for when some priority things get done before I splurge.
@tippitiwichet @Novels56 There's a book called Hatchet that is similar that you might like then.
@danielbsmith @Novels56 I will keep an eye out for it, thanks.
@tippitiwichet I didn’t realize there was a third book. Did you ever read any Gary Paulsen’s books…Hatchet and 4 others in the series (Brian’s Saga) Excellent books even if they are written for younger readers. There are so many excellent YA novels out there.
@Novels56 Lol, I think I just saw you like someone else recommend that. Fine, I'll read it! Lol.
I’m the same way about Mt Everest. There was a time I read every book published about summiting. Especially women.
When moving, my son unpacked a huge National Geographic map of multiple routes to summit Everest. “Planning a climbing trip?” he asked. “In my dreams” I responded.
Forever in my dreams.
@LnzyHou @tippitiwichet @Novels56
I'd be happy just to get as far as Base Camp, or wherever you could actually *see* the mountain.
But the peak itself has turned into a lethal garbage pit, littered with trash and dead bodies. Such a pity. Such a waste.
@DavidSalo @tippitiwichet @Novels56
Never had delusions. Would be thrilled with base camp. But they say, once you get there you catch summit fever.
@LnzyHou @Novels56 I literally dream of beach combing. Or rather being within sight of the shore, and unable to wander around looking for shells due to social obligation. I used to live in a tent on the beach, and trying to stay near camp with my partner and friends will apparently haunt me forever. I wanted to go dig for clams, they wanted to go shopping in town and bring back boring shit like bread.
I read that book in my teens (and still have it on my shelf). I never knew there had been a movie. I recently found there was a sequel, but I haven't read it yet.
@DavidSalo @Novels56 It's a trilogy, I only found that out last year, haven't read the others yet, but it's in my Amazon list. Oh, and her books on animal behavior are good too, esp for kids.
@tippitiwichet one of my favorite books. My fifth grade teacher read it to us back in the dark ages. 😂
