Couple face 27 life sentences for stealing cattle.
I don't think it's okay to steal stuff, including cattle rustling.
But are life sentences for that crime appropriate, especially considering murderers, rapists, and corporate leaders that do thousands of times more damage don't get that?
Notice that certain property crimes get treated as more important than crimes that directly harm humans?
does this result hearken back to the days it was a capital offence to steal someone's horse? survival at stake?
cattle are also livelihood not just property, like a stereo, etc.
@holon42 @AskTheDevil Probably, but like other old laws it shouldn't be enforced. I live here in OK and have totally walked backwards while eating a hamburger and broken other blue laws for kicks and no one got all huffy about it.
yes, it does definitely seem inappropriate and hateful these days.
terrible. were these folks bad'uns, incorrigible types?
@holon42 @AskTheDevil Probably, given the local definition of incorrigible is often "not a member of my church".
@holon42 Yeah. It's one of those places where you meet someone, think they're a good person, watch them defend the downtrodden of one type, and then they go and call another type of downtrodden "an abomination". On the other hand, the good ones tend to know how to support each other, fostering resilience with each other, or I've had good luck with that.
@tippitiwichet
i'm glad it's working for you. delicate situations 😬
