I was at the post office today and listened to the "lively" discussion of two oldsters. One, a Trumper, was trying to convert the other, a Kamala man.
I had to bite my tongue. Mr. Kamala talked about Jan 6. Mr. Donald poo pooed it and cited "the takeover of Portland" as well as some Great Lakes area city, and said it isn't anything unheard of. Apples and Oranges, sir.
Then he saw Mr.K wearing a cross and told him that Trump was the pro-Catholic candidate. 1/2
@BlueStateBabe I am always taken aback by the "Portland" argument. Most people that make this argument have never seen, let alone spent any time in Portland. They just use it as some mythical liberal dystopia. I spend time in Portland now and again. It is often very busy, has lots of people, but the "worst" thing about it is a toss-up between long lines and finding parking. It has just as many problems as any other city and never lives up to the myths.
@BlueStateBabe @sirgeefive
At the time I had people on FB trying to tell me the entire city was "destroyed" by the protests.
They sincerely believed it because that was how Fox painted Portland.
Their outrage, however misguided, was understandable. I would be outraged if some red town got destroyed.
It is super hard to get people to think about how propaganda works if it is being applied to themselves.
@Xponent_Rob @BlueStateBabe Yeah, I live a couple hours south of Portland, and we had our own protests and a couple of kids threw rocks at a T-Mobile. Honestly, nothing new. Luckily for us, we didn't get the Fox news treatment. I suspect that a lot of these myths come from Fox news and right wing politicians. They spent the last decade hyping some fictional vision of places people infrequently go.
The liberals "took over" Oregon a hell of a long time ago. Makes it a nice place to live.
@sirgeefive
He was painting a picture of cities being taken over by the liberals thru force.
No. Nobody owned any city. yes there were nightly demonstrations in Portland. Some places experienced vandalism. Some vandalism was traced back to far right organizations wanting to blame the liberals. There is always looting after hurricanes, but it isn't the hurricane's fault.
Portland overall operated mostly as it did normally. I'm assuming the same for the other city he spoke of.
