It's amazing that ethical behavior is somehow a negative.
Here’s an idea. How about we make all social media sites provide and open public API for legitimated researchers who can view all ads, and public posts from participants provided the data is analyzed directly on that site’s own secure servers or, if downloaded, the names and other PII must be anonymized and held in encrypted stores only for a short duration to run the analysis then discarded.
