Boy, did they ever get this wrong. Asheville was #3 on the list of areas most likely to receive an influx of climate migration. Now they will be leaving.

@elbutterfield

Lived Asheville 12 years. There was no indication of any weather emergency. In fact, last winter this was total snowfall.
Maybe 1/2” bearly stuck to the grass.

Didn’t really need a winter coat. Sunshine almost daily.

@LnzyHou It is 325 miles by air from where the hurricane made landfall. Everybody who thought just those living at the coastline and along low-lying waterways were in danger now need to look carefully at their infrastructure for disaster.

@elbutterfield @LnzyHou it's so mind-boggling. I kept expecting to hear about *South* Carolina, which I'm sure got hit too, but man--NC--inland NC no less. That breaks my brain.

NYT has a pretty good visual report on this:

Look up photos of Camille in VA, 1969.
Hurricanes get caught on the mountains and rain themselves out.

@MelissaHDavis @rpardee @LnzyHou Yep. I think Helene stayed a hurricane longer over land though, which accounts for all the downed trees.
