When you turn people away to show how self-reliant you are, it creates another kind of debt: an impoverishment of the social/emotional network, which is strengthened every time there is a positive caring interaction.

None of us has ever been totally self-reliant: we all owe things to a larger society including parents, teachers, relatives, friends, and random strangers. But we don't owe that debt individually: it's something we owe forward to those to whom we'll stand in those rôles.
