Rice has naturally occuring arsenic. .Where it is
grown can increase the load.
China and India have a lot of arsenic in their water. But they aint the only ones ....

a follow up on this thread
arsenic load can be reduced by washing dry rice until water is clear, soaking in 3x the water as long as overnight and discarding the water, cooking in 2x the water until tender, drain and steam on simmer until rice is fluffy.

@pennyphilosophy

omg. i'm gonna die.

but i'm gonna die enjoying my basmati. am i okay w/ that?

yes. i am. πŸ€”

@singlemaltgirl California rice is cleaner than what comes from Texas. we still have choice.
xx

@pennyphilosophy oh, i think all my rice comes from asian countries...but i'm in πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦.

@pennyphilosophy Just as spinach can take up lead so can other plants. The big problems are converted fields growing rice that were previously cotton fields. Arsenic was used on Thoes fields as a pesticide. Places like India and Thailand don't have such converted fields but the US has many

@Jenna_says_Relax kale uptakes high levels of heavy metals too.
it is best to be aware, n'cest ce pas? xx

@pennyphilosophy Is there an update to this article, or another source with more recent info? This particular study was done over 10 years ago & I remember reading this in 2014. Wondering if things have changed, for better or worse especially with Thai jasmine rice.

@pennyphilosophy Thanks - it's pretty current, 2020ish. skimmed thru some parts - yikes. Gonna wash my rice more.

@MistyKitty3 we use the grey water from it for cleaning stuff.
otherwise, its a lot of waste.
xx

@MistyKitty3 should imagine it aint better, considering the state of pollution and production these days.
we eat rice a few times a week. following the mitigation ideas we have offered here has helped us to process. we use apple pectin among other things to remove heavy metals in the body.
thanks xx

@pennyphilosophy Between Nicaraguans (who brought in the article to work, & freaking out), Mexicans, Cubans, Central Americans, South Americans & Jamaicans, we all eat rice every day, 2x day & not a 1/2 cup serving. Servings are 1 to 2 cups cooked rice. 😭 We're all going to die.

@MistyKitty3 of something, friend. eventually. yes.

figure out how to reduce risk. trust your luck. enjoy.
xx

@pennyphilosophy Most regular long grain white rice does not have the state where it was grown written on the package, unfortunately. However, Vigo brand arborio rice is grown in Italy, I use that a lot. A gazillion people in south florida eat large quantities of rice daily too which is how I came to read the original article.
