I don’t think there is a #compost hashtag yet, until now ! In my area, the temps are barely warm enough to get any reactions going. A few more weeks until it is consistently above 40degrees F

Best advice I can give is to post about what you like. Hashtags are still quite useful here if you're looking for others who share your interests. @CoSoTips has a guide that contains some popular examples.

If you want interaction with your posts, provide interaction with other people's posts. It doesn't really work on Twitter, but it works extremely well here.
Don't worry about "follow backs." Many people keep an eye on the Firehose and mostly block topics they don't want to see rather than getting so many people on their Friends lists that they've just created a second firehose.
