CHUTKAN: “What the defendant is currently doing — the fact that he’s running a political campaign has to yield to the orderly administration of justice. If that means he can’t say exactly what he wants to say about witnesses in this case, that’s how it has to be.”

@NiveusLepus Figures. But what the Republican legislators didn’t realize was that the harder they made voting, the less they could claim fraud!

Has anyone claimed yet that the Ohio special election was rigged?

I spent a wonderful vacation on Maui back in the day. Terrible to see the devastation that lovely island is undergoing.

@kel We seem to be talking past each other, in that you’re misinterpreting what I’ve said, and I’m not sure what you’re saying. But it sounds like you’re saying that Democrats and Republicans working together for the common good has never been a thing. Or at least it was too uncommon to matter. Do I have that right?

@kel Some stubborn people are old.
Some old people are stubborn.
But not all old people are stubborn, and not all stubborn people are old.
You can fool some of the people all the time . . .

@kel I’m old enough to remember when that was the way it did work. The classic example is Goldwater telling fascist Nixon he had to resign or the Senate would convict him upon impeachment.

@kel While not all Republicans are fascists, all fascists are Republican. To prevent being tarred with the same brush, the anti-fascist Republicans need to fight back against their fascist brothers in the party. I’m not holding my breath.

Heard a so-called legal pundit on the radio today saying Trump will get convicted in D.C. and New York because the jury pools and the judges there are prejudiced against Trump. The host pushed back: So you don’t have faith in the justice system? Answer: “No.” But what about the case in Florida, where the jury pool is pro-Trump and the judge there has already shown favoritism toward Trump? Answer: “That’s different. Biden didn’t lose Florida by that much, so the jury would be fairer.” C’mon.

Lindsey Graham. Bless his heart. He’s thrown away any semblance of integrity he might have had since he went all in for Trump. His latest: “Trump beat me like a drum.” And he was proud of it. And this: “I like Trump, and he likes himself, so we have that in common.”

@AskTheDevil That’s true. But it’s in the judge’s purview, and they can deviate from the prosecutor’s request.

@AskTheDevil Not quite right. Being let out without paying a fee, either through posting bail or securing a bail bond, is “release on one’s own recognizance.” Bail would be the money the court decrees to be the amount required to be free pending trial, and a bond is an arrangement with a bail bondsman to pay that amount on one’s behalf for a fee - usually 10%.

@ReneeVoiceBrand @S_r_stone Many people don’t understand how the cash bail system works. If you’re rich and can post bail, you get it back when you show up for trial. But if you can only post bail through a bail bondsman, he gets back the money he posted on your behalf, and the 10% you paid him for doing that is his fee.

@ReneeVoiceBrand @S_r_stone Some places are considering doing away with cash bail to address the inequities in the system. I think Illinois is one of those.

Trump has never paid bail for his three indictments, so I hope articles and statements will stop referring to him as being “out on bail.”
