As an XMPP fan, I support this:
"What if we could make a Signal that was a little more open? And an XMPP that was a little bit less diverse? Accept that we would trade some of the agility for robustness, and some of our diversity in favour of consistent usability.
Can we move beyond Signal’s flaws to build something that is open, interoperable, user-friendly, consistent and decentralized? I believe so, and as they say, there’s only one way to find out."
@voltronic Interesting project, thanks for linking it!
I just spun up a server to play with. I can send you an invite if you want to check it out.
@john_b
I'm game to try it, but don't have time ATM.
I already have Conversations on my phone, which I use for the small XMPP CoSo community a few of us set up a while back.
@voltronic If you happen to find time in the next week, this link will get you (and anyone else who wants to use it!) into the 'coso' circle on my brand-new Snikket server:
https://chat.vpot8.ooo/invite/p73s16RBH0EzxmVp/
I'm impressed with it from my initial testing, though I don't know for sure if / how long I'll keep this instance running.
@voltronic so I found their Plan for doing circles. It sounds like what you/we want is on the roadmap, just not there yet:
https://github.com/snikket-im/snikket-server/issues/58
I also found an FAQ that doesn't appear to actually be linked to from anywhere on their site (or at least I hadn't been able to find it):
And they've got an active XMPP channel where the devs hang out - which I have now joined via my Snikket client:
xmpp:[email protected]?join
/nosanitize
@voltronic Naturally they release a new server version less than 24 hours after I deployed mine. Good thing it only took about 30 seconds to upgrade!
