If the Civil War was about ”States Rights” then why were Southern states listing one of the reasons they were seceding as the Northern states practicing their right to give sanctuary to escaped slaves?
@jasonpaisley Their "state right" to keep slaves. 😑 The north was more industrial because it needed to figure out how to be more efficient due to paid labor. There were pockets of slavery in the north, but nothing like the slave industry of the south.

"Well it was about economic activity! They wanted to bankrupt the south and wouldn't meet in the middle!"
"Oh yeah? What was driving the economic activity of the south that they were unwilling to compromise on?"

@FreedomATX There was a significant amount of slavery in southern Illinois because many of the residents there had migrated up from Kentucky and Tennessee. Makes Abraham Lincoln's ascent to power a bit more remarkable. @jasonpaisley
@FreedomATX Lincoln evolved. He always had a core dislike for slavery, but he was willing to disguise it at times for votes. And as he met people like Frederick Douglass, it opened his eyes RE black ability. @jasonpaisley

I had a number of ancestors who fought for the Union. One in Sherman's march.
They wrote many letters home.
Talked of the reason for the war in a number of letters. States Rights wasn't mentioned. They knew.
@jasonpaisley Also, when they wrote their individual constitutions, they were pretty much identical to the #USConstitution save the bit about #slavery.
