if your body were a horse you're riding, and it looked at you like you feel, wouldn't you give it a rest and take care of it with food and water?
i am bothered by the metaphor of the body as a "meat sack" that is somehow to blame for whatever.
our bodies are living creatures with needs, sentient beings.
the taoist image of riding a large bovine doesn't suggest beating it to make it obey.
discipline is important, but body is not our enemy: a bad religious trope needs to go.

My body has never been a cage to me, even when it is broken and infirm.
It has always been a vehicle and tool and window into the world of matter, where one can _live_.
@AskTheDevil @NiveusLepus @holon42 I'm coming late to the party (I'll go back) but just seeing this, you remind me of the amazing #StephenHawkings 💙
@AskTheDevil @holon42 It's the earliest thing that I have memory of, and its persitent. This very real sense of distance and separation, like you say, like a vehicle, but it comes with it this sense of being locked in this dark room that I can't get out of, hence, cage.
It is so freaky and disconcerting sometimes that I can make this thing move.
I prefer the metaphor of "We are but a brain, a control center piloting a bone mecha covered in meat and flesh armor.
Sounds more macabre and kinda anime. 🤷🏻♂️

I like to say that I am a spirit, and I just _wear_ a body.
@AskTheDevil @Heucuva8 @holon42 @NiveusLepus
I've never thought of my body as separate from my self. Any more than I think of a part of my body as separate from the whole of it. My eye is part of my body as my body is part of my self.
My consciousness, my spirit, are informed and shaped by my physical reality. Thoughts and feelings occur in the matrix of my cells.
Water is hydrogen and oxygen; if you divide the elements, the water disappears. So too with mind/body/spirit.

I might feel more that way if I didn't go through bodies like popcorn.
; )

I can imagine that, against the scope of a wider eternity, a 100 years is akin to changing pants.
@NiveusLepus @tyghebright @Heucuva8 @holon42 I rarely make it anywhere close to 100 years!
But yes. To a great degree. If the pants came with connections, loved ones, projects, and other stuff that is really sad when you have to leave them behind, of course.
But after 30-100 years, change is nice, too.
@AskTheDevil @tyghebright @Heucuva8 @holon42 Have you ever encountered old friends in new threads, so to say?
@NiveusLepus @AskTheDevil @tyghebright @Heucuva8
Merleau-Ponty's concept of "flesh" (chair):
"the mysterious tissue or matrix that underlies and gives rise to both the perceiver and the perceived
as interdependent aspects of its spontaneous activity",
and he identifies this elemental matrix with the interdependent web of earthly life."
@holon42 @AskTheDevil @tyghebright @Heucuva8 That is interesting.
Merleau Ponty's existential philosophy is very interesting. lived body, lifeworld, lived experience. all primary.
@holon42 @NiveusLepus @AskTheDevil @Heucuva8
I love that.
That's more poetic so I dig it.
Kind of adds more dramatic flair to the lyrics
"The sky, is burning. I believe my soul's on fire."

There's a verse in Paul's epistles which is too often misused to point at people who are visibly doing things they don't like such as smoking, drugs, alcohol abuse, overeating etc but actually is really encouraging in this context:
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Looking after that temple includes rest ❤️
@NiveusLepus A renovation in progress 🤣
@stueytheround all it wants is pretzels and to be lazy. It thinks that would be the best, but I know it needs maintenance and conditioning. Especially because I need it to function when I'm out doing things like moves and stuff.
@holon42 Exactly. This body may be my cage, but it is alive and never asked to be saddled with me. Though I do not like it, and I don't understand it, I try to take good care of it. Being a living thing, it is sacred and deserving of compassion.
