just came across something relevant in Jung, using the sea journey archetype to describe the dissociative experience in alchemy, i.e., psychology: its dangers and its transformative power.
"This, in the alchemical allegory, is expressed by the King's cry for help from the depths of his unconscious, a dissociated state. The conscious mind should respond to this call:"
yes, identifying with archetypes is a road to insanity. Jung talks about that with reference to Nietzsche.
the unconscious is like the ocean, beautiful, full of wonderful wildlife, freeing, etc, but dangerous too. one can drown.
still people insist on surfing🤣

These archetypes can be somewhat useful. The problem is when people take them literally.
