The war on drugs is the equivalent of a witch hunt conducted against imaginary witches, where the real witches show up 40 years later.
As to what to do about this, having a society in which fewer people felt impelled to destroy themselves with addictive substances would be the ideal solution, but how do we get there from here?

indeed. the opioid epidemic is socially destructive. so many people living on the streets, zombified by addiction.
the conditions creating this situation could be alleviated, but authorities prefer their depraved disregard for the consequences of their policies.
