@janallmac and yet there are some things that are transmitted so viscerally, either through media or more frequently orally, that make the hate stick. For me, growing up with a Hungarian Holocaust survivor, I have an enormous amount of hate for Nazis, Soviet-era Communists, and their fascist Hungarian collaborators.
@janallmac hate is taught and transmitted. Generational hate is frequently subconscious and the longer it's been around, the more difficult it is to find the original reasons.
@hallmarc P.S. My family/oral traditions tried to make me hate people too. Traumatized people do that, naturally, how could they not? 🤷 Especially in the case you describe, much more so than my own, but either way, that is natural and very common. You don't have to feel bad about it or any kind of way about it, it makes perfect sense that it would happen.
And for myself, I don't think I can ever just "get over" 9/11 or forget that violence, either...I think that's a permanent mark for my generation.
Can individuals be realistic about stopping violence without hating people or perpetuating violence? That would be the goal for me, personally. Not sure it's possible.
But one day all this will be ancient history.
@janallmac younger gens don't have the baggage. They can be influenced by older gens but if what is around them does not feed hate they can move on. Placing hateful leaders in important institutions fans and enforces old hates [backlash on anyone who doesn't support it]. This is why it is so important to have good leaders. @hallmarc
@AnnetteTRemain @hallmarc
Oh yes, I agree re. the good leaders part. And far too often people who seek power are not working towards anything beneficial, like peace. (Hamas, for example.)
@hallmarc
Yes, I understand, and I don't blame you. 💜 Truly I don't. I think that's what's referred to as generational trauma (?) forgive me, not sure. I think generational trauma takes generations to heal, more than one human lifetime. Overcoming that kind of trauma is superhuman. I don't know about you, but I'm not superhuman!
In the show Ghosts, the characters have been dead for centuries. Maybe that's all that really kills hate. Death.
