I got in a conversation with someone whose company gives remote employees a regular stipend — $150/quarter or some such — to improve their home office setup. After a while, he said, he’d filled in the stuff he needed, such as webcam, monitor, chair, headphones.

That made me curious. If your company gave you money to outfit the home office (or you wish they did), what would you spend it on? After the usual suspects mentioned above, that is?

I purchased an adjustable standing desk, which I adore, a desk chair, a laptop stand, some lights for Zoom calls, and some little... wongles or whatever they are to plug extra things in.

Over time, of course! I love my home office setup now.

Some people purchased extra monitors; I already had one, could not live without for my job.

@estherschindler That’s a sweet deal. Not only do I not get a stipend, I can’t write off office expenses any more. I’d buy bookshelves, filing cabinets, and eventually a new office chair. The gaming chair I have is not great. And then some cheap art.

@estherschindler Now I’m going to ask for an office stipend. They have zero physical plant overhead for me, and I know they bill for it. I’m 100% remote.

P.S. If you are in the market for sturdy and cheap bookshelves that are not MDF, which I despise, I can recommend some good one from Amazon.

You have to assemble them, but that's not difficult at all, and they're really sturdy. It's called "Unbrand Black 5 Tier Metal Bookshelf Rack". Price has gone up, unshockingly, but they're still relatively affordable.

@estherschindler

I’d upgrade my terribly old laptops. Or I’d get an ergonomic chair or toner.
