I can drive from my house to Missoula, Montana nonstop in my hybrid. It's 530 miles, about 9 hours.

That's a road trip. An EV is useful for commuting. That's it.

One Tesla station is a legacy slow unit that's 10+ years old, the other is a medium that's out of service. The Shell Charge point is in the city lot behind fences. The other two are both slow.

Literally 1/2 the listed stations over town (off island) wouldn't work. The best option was a 50 mile drive away.

I live 20 miles from downtown Seattle. There are 6 slow public chargers for 88,000 people on the 40-mile length of the island.

@Luber905 @evamarie
Nope. I used Google maps, and 3 different charging station apps.

In rural America, where the most common vehicle is a pickup truck, there just isn't charging infrastructure.

Places where you have a choice of multiple fast food chains - ok. But that's not even close to characterizing rural life.

@Alfred So, about 20 billion tons.

Good to know. Ty.

@Alfred Can you estimate the weight of a .5 meter depth of water over an area the size of the world's oceans?

@Alfred Is the weight distribution changes associated with worldwide ice loss typically included in climate change models?

@wyrmeboi
To put that in freedom units, the Earth's average temperature should be 52.5F, but now it's about 54F, and continuing to rise, and rise more quickly. This article is about what a massive disaster it will be if it reaches 60F, or even 61.5F.

Seriously - extreme weather is one thing. We're seeing more, and worse weather effects every year. Now extrapolate that to extreme CLIMATE. Daily, constant tornados. Weekly hurricanes - maybe only monthly in the winter. Monsoon level rains.

Best quote:
"For example, if you think the solution to political polarization is to drug Congress with magic mushrooms, then a) nobody’s ever going to prove you wrong, and b) I think I know which anti-drug program you got in high school."

@feloneouscat They were making it up on booze and soda, and probably had a back-deal with shrimp companies.

@thewebrecluse
The entire NCIS enterprise is possibly the least accurate portrayal of any federal or state agency, ever. Possibly exceeded by that singing cop series: Cop Rock, but at least that one seems plausible.

@LnzyHou @EdgeOErin

Ants stink. Literally. I'm also suspicious of myrmecologists classifying nearly identical ants as separate species simply based on a difference in width between antennae.

To me that's like calling redheads and blonds different species. They (the myrmecologists) are exaggerating to make their jobs seem more important.

The face-saving narrative:
"This scar? This was a bad one. I was in shock, and by the time I got treatment the only thing they could do was basically a band-aid. Left a neat scar, but it wasn't a lot of fun at the time. Gave me a new appreciation for sharp knives, though."

@Smersh @JamieTheTransfemme

I agree. They're not trying to simplify lives, they're trying to justify their job.

Get used to organizational inefficiencies. It's part of life, and you learn it in school.

Bright people will always have a better way of doing things - but change is always challenged. Always.

@evamarie @Luber905
I rented an EV earlier this year. The fast chargers near work turned out to be in the city lot, behind gates. There were two mid-level chargers nearby, charging at ~9mi/hr. There were another 2 mid-level 10 miles down the road.

Home charging, and the 2 local chargers were low-level at ~3mi/ hr.

The nearest fast chargers were 10 miles from home, but a $20 ferry ride away. Of the 6 listed, 3 didn't work, and the Wal-Mart ones were busy. There was one reliable double chgr.

@TetsuKaba
A clear outlier, but bolsters my contention that citizenship should not be automatic or assumed.

Citizenship should require affirmation, at least.

Everyone - yes, that means YOU too - should check their voting status.

Do it today. Now would be good. NOW!

The infrastructure for EVs is limited to densely populated areas, and occasional islands of support.

They're fine for commuting, but not for road trips.
