Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine:
The refrigeration problem no one is talking about.

The use of this molecule in a vaccine poses a distribution logistical problem: how to keep the shot viable. That’s because these vaccine candidates have to be kept ultra cold, minus-112-degrees-Fahrenheit cold.

@corlin The distribution of this particular vaccine is a heavy lift.

@flygande_ren @corlin Nearly immposssible since I don’t know if there are -70C refrigerator trucks that can sustain that temp for more than 24 hours. The consumption of coolant and gas would be daunting.

@VelvetDuchess @flygande_ren

Not just the distribution, but the whole process of administering the two doses. Brand new protocols need to be developed, tested, and reviewed. Then train up 10's of thousands of healthcare workers.

This ain't your flu shot.....

@corlin @flygande_ren What about the 10% that don’t develop immunity? What are they supposed to do? There’s no pre-screen for success. So it’s just wasted?

@VelvetDuchess @corlin @flygande_ren
They were talking like FedEx would be used... And Dry Ice...

And i to myself... You just said it needs to stay at -94F. And Dry ice is at -73.

And FedEx is Soo good at being late with any package i get...

This is gonna be ugly. Nevermind The Idiots bloviating...

@VelvetDuchess @flygande_ren

I am sure it will end up on a gradient. 10% with no immunity, and up to 50% with some immunity, and some number with total immunity.... that way stage 3 is so important, and can not be rushed.

But yes there will be people that get the vaccine, and develop no immunity. and that dose will be wasted.

@VelvetDuchess @corlin Once you get past a certain number of individuals vaccinated, the incidence of the disease should drop.
People should be ready to mask & distance well into the vaccination periods.

@corlin @VelvetDuchess Two doses timed and tracking each individual dose, verification that it's been given, etc. Each step in itself isn't that difficult, including the shipping, but on this scale it's a really heavy lift.
There will be multiple types of vaccines produced as with other vaccines. Some shouldn't require that type of shipping.
