@Roddio In the 1950s, #polio was TERRIFYING. Here I am in Quebec on the St. Lawrence Seaway, far from Massachusetts where polio was running rampant. Nobody knew how it spread, there was no vaccine, no cure, only a long future locked in an iron lung in a polio ward. My parents - probably most parents - were justifiably freaking out. Any MAGA folks old enough to propose a return to these dark days surely had THEIR polio vaccination so THEY’RE safe. Hell needs another circle for these ghouls.
@SupplySgt @cassandra17lina @Roddio I knew a guy in the 90s, in a wheelchair because he had it as a kid. He hung out at an arcade and often let all the kids know how important vaccines were.
@SupplySgt @cassandra17lina @Roddio my dad had polio as a kid he seemed to be ok as an adult though.
@Vickietorious @cassandra17lina @Roddio sorry to hear he had it, glad no lasting effects, Mitch McConnell had it as a kid also, doesn’t appear to have any effects from it
@SupplySgt @cassandra17lina @Roddio My dad had polio as a kid, he walked with a limp and had almost no muscle tone in his legs. They used to line us all up in the gym at school to get free polio vaccines, that’s how important it was. Back then they were more concerned about stopping it than about profit.
@cjcrew @cassandra17lina @Roddio sorry to hear your father had issues from it, I received mine in 1957 kindergarten, the 2 people close was a lady that was one of the family owners I worked for on an egg ranch, the other was the older brother of a school friend, the lady was on metal crutches all her life, the brother had a limp from a deformity in his foot, both felt lucky to be mobile
@SupplySgt @cassandra17lina @Roddio All things considered I think my dad got off a little easy. I knew a guy who had to use those crutches that hooked over your arm. He had polio as a child, had to be in the late 50s early 60s because he was just a couple years older than me. Until I met him I hadn’t realized it was still around at that time.
I really don’t understand people who are anti-vaccine. There are some nasty things out there that vaccines protect us from.
@cjcrew @cassandra17lina @Roddio yeah those crutches are the ones Ida used also, she contracted it in 1916 when she was a small child, she functioned well, helped run the family egg ranch, learned to drive at 60, very independent lady, so many that weren’t as fortunate
@cassandra17lina @Roddio I knew several people back in the 1950s-60 suffering from the devastating effects of polio! It wasn’t a pretty sight!
