When people ask “why didn’t they evacuate?” please consider that many folks don’t have cars, have no relatives or friends they can stay with, can’t afford gasoline, tolls, or hotels, don’t dare leave and risk losing their jobs because they can’t return in time, can’t safely evacuate their elderly loved ones, won’t leave without their pets, or they have legitimate health concerns about staying in shelters. Poor shaming them in the midst of a catastrophe is not a good look. #Idalia
Great Point
Sadly, one of our local public schools used as during Hurricane Florence shelter had at least one death from opioid withdrawal as well as a norovirus outbreak that sickened many folks. I can understand that some people - especially the immune compromised - would not want to be crammed into a shelter, especially since we’re seeing a resurgence in COVID.
