Last night, I bought Baldur's Gate 3. I've been testing my PC since I got the new GPU/fresh installed the OS, and I'm certain it can handle the game.

So imagine my frustration when, upon downloading the game, it failed to launch.Troubleshot for 3 hours, no dice.

Got up this morning, ready for more troubleshooting. I did my morning routine of updating the system. Noted a Mesa update. Decided to reboot. For fun, loaded Steam and launched BG3.. and it works. Bye.

This i5 6400 is trying not to catch on fire keep up with this RX 6800. So I know the limits of this setup (I mean I did but hard numbers yo) and the next upgrades I wanna look at. A 7700k which a BIOS flash will enable support for(including OCing so the chip ends up only being about a 10% bottleneck 🤣 ), and a 2tb NVME for game storage so I can get them off the 8TB HDD. Been kinda enjoying this whole process building a PC, again. Last time was '08 so, shit's changed, lol.

Well it's been a couple days of frustration with the new AMD card. I was unable to remove Nvidia stuff from my OS, so I ended up fresh installing to make sure there were no driver issues. Now I can't install some things but that's likely a Wine issue. Trying to figure out sys performance, it finally dawned on me Phoronix stuff runs on Linux. Duh. Ran GLmark2 and 6 mins later I checked my score against Open Benchmarking's and y'all, this poor CPU cut the card score in half lol.

I've been banging my head against the wall with this GPU switch from Nvidia to AMD. System tells me the most current Mesa is installed but there's no way it's working properly based on the performance I'm seeing. Tried reinstalling all packages which failed a bunch of times due to "pgp sigs" but finally succeeded and after a reboot nothing has changed. I guess I could try the "Pro" drivers.. I am thinking a fresh install is looking more likely tho, damn it.

Part of today's agenda: installing this. I am curious to see just how pathetic the 1050TI it's replacing will look in comparison. Also looking forward to a better experience than the last time I tried a Radeon GPU with Linux (in 2007).

I just bought a GPU for my recently built "new" PC (built hurriedly around a gifted 6th gen i5) that cost almost as much as the rest of the PC. Is it overkill that will be forever bottlenecked in this system? Yep. I figure it'll give me a reason to game on PC more often, and most of the games I play on PC this card will barely register "gaming" happening anyway, lol. WoW is not a heavy lift for a modern card. Card should last til the next build, even.

Jala has returned home after 3 years and is about to face all her exes and her family as her sister prepares to marry.
This is a great game. I quite enjoyed the windows into various cultures. It's great to see so much diversity and representation, done well and not played for a joke or to tick things off a list "the kids are into". This is a game all should at least try. 👍 👍 👍

You are Etienne, a writer who can dive into books. Steal the artifacts and escape your shackles.
This is an interesting little game. FPS walking sim in the "real world", isometric turn based crawler when you dive into a book. Seeing how you interact with the books via bringing IRL things with you is cool, as is watching how the books change. Reading is fundamental. 👍

So here's my usual sentiment for today: If you're lucky enough your family isn't split across the current political chasm, Happy Thanksgiving. If family isn't an option, Happy Friendsgiving, hopefully. If you don't give a shit/aren't in the US, enjoy your Thursday. Also fuck Black Friday. Hope none of you have to go to work this afternoon for that shit.

The water has gone. You must climb The Tower in search of why.
This is an impressive climbing sim, in that the climbing mechanic is (mostly) painless. You can't walk off an edge, nice. I dig the art style. Finding the collectibles is rewarding enough I've gone back in looking for them after completing the "story". Following the stories of the people who left the tower brings the feels.👍 👍

I "finished" Jusant last night. Then I went and looked at the Chapter listings and was happy to confirm I had missed many of the collectibles, because I don't wanna be done with the game yet.
