@LiberalLibrarian should be able to be cooler, like 200-250F. That gives time for smoke flavor to permeate. I smoke vegetables, fish, chicken, anything that's mostly not moving. Onions and garlic are pretty great. Try things!

IMO NYT/CNN's predicament is similar to another big story-of-the-moment, NASA de-orbiting the ISS.
Do it right, get lots of attention and maybe kudos. Go too slow or too fast (both easy failure modes) and get an out of control highly visible catastrophe.

Let's hope NASA gets it right I live near the flight path.
