"... the company isn’t providing the entire list. A representative for the commission declined to comment on private business decisions."

Okay so the company does value privacy of a sort.

Brick your computer at your own peril.

Good luck!

Cipher only overwrites blank space, right? So I can use it on my operating drive?

And just how good is that delete?

@Beanc Not my area of expertise, but I think it effectively overwrites de-allocated blocks. Prior data is gone.
BUT
Windows (server?) can make shadow volumes, i.e. journalled file system. Cipher won't touch that and data retrieval is conceivable.

@evistre what do you think of metafilter?
I never spent time on reddit, so I don't know what specific itch it scratches. Been around since BBSes, so these all blur together...

@MLClark hmmm. Lot to chew on, thanks.
Is ephemerality of social media content another consideration?
The saying "the Internet never forgets" isn't very apt* and I think attention spans are shorter. Hence maybe unconsciously (being generous) some folks feel empowered to say *whatever* and expect no lasting consequences.

*The Internet is not equipped for preservation in any real sense. No one could afford it. Will this post be available in 100 years? In 10? McCluhan's book will be.

@annamuneca
You might be lucky: if you can see ice in the unit (looking down theough the top), turning it off and letting that melt can revive it. While that's happening I'd look at the register filters, clean or replace.

@phase2
Yeah, I mean some of the real people are fake. See: Jill Stein.

Skepticism and vigilance online are prudent. (preaching to the choir, I know)
I'm going to select an information literacy guide at random from a university library:

@BosmangBeratna
So this article is about nanoscale effects, which are freaky and amazing and IMHO will be all over the (science) news soon and for a long time.

@BosmangBeratna
"But for whatever reason, the student who was working on that forgot to plug in the power.”

Yeah that tracks.

@Beanc Like, go to a Barnes and Noble (for example), pick up a Rand McNally or whichever atlas and peruse a place you know well. Bet you 37 cents something will look goofy. It's on purpose.

@Beanc easter eggs all the way down. Misspellings, fictitious stadiums, initials.
