We have two launches scheduled for this week. Both the civilian and military spaceports rely on the 45th weather squadron for forecasts.

If you want a peek behind the scenes, here are two useful links:

Right now they're at HURCON 5, meaning, "Something wicked this way comes." πŸŒ€

This has me feeling a bit better about our chances here in Brevard County. The color code suggests a 50%-60% chance of 40+ MPH sustained winds.

The ten-day forecast has 28 MPH sustained winds for us on Wednesday-Thursday.

Combine the two, and it suggests we should have winds that are annoying but not threatening.

But we'll see how the day goes.

Not so good for the Gulf side.

FYI Elon Musk showed up today at the rally in Butler PA. In case you're looking for any more reason to be paranoid about Zombie Twitter.

@teengee I was contacted today by someone flying out an entourage for the launch. I told him they should cancel, there's no way that launches on Thursday.

The averages for where the models show the eye to pass ... Landfall around Tampa, exiting the state through Cape Canaveral. But it's early; almost the entire state is in play, except for the Panhandle.

@Sr0bi IMO it went off the rails after the US and France partitioned Vietnam with the promise of elections, only to renege on the promise because they knew the Communists would win.

@Sr0bi I just don't see that at all. Vietnam has a long and complicated history. Sputnik was a blip (as well as a beep) on the history radar. From the US perspective, all it really did was lead to the creation of . used it as a rhetorical bludgeon to claim the US was suffering from a "missile gap" which wasn't true, but it got him elected. was the one who ratcheted up US involvement in Vietnam, for reasons that had nothing to do with Sputnik.

Now at 80%. The next name on the list is .

The ten-day forecast for Merritt Island is showing more confidence. Winds for Wednesday now at 22 MPH.

This 90-minute documentary, " Mania," was released in 2007. The producer posted it on YouTube earlier this year. Definitely worth the watch for the vintage footage.

This is the Orlando Evening Star's front page, Monday October 7, 1957. The fallout has begun. The lead story from blames the Pentagon for not having used von Braun's Army Jupiter C missile to launch a satellite first.

The Eisenhower administration had rejected the Jupiter C in favor of a civilian rocket, part of a new project called Vanguard. Using a military rocket for the civilian IGY was thought to appear belligerent. The Soviets had no problem using an ICBM. (6/6)
