Diane Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle was so good I just don’t know how to feel about Miyazaki’s adaptation other then disappointed anymore.
It’s not just that a lot was left out and watered down.
It’s the throwing away of the very core of the book, the mechanism on which the whole plot hinges, that’s seriously irking me now.
Hard to explain. Read it for yourselves.

People I know freaking out about a “gay parade” happening anywhere in the world: “OH NO THIS MUST BE STOPPED!”
Me, a straight white guy: “What’s the problem, my dude? Did you see a male nipple? Are you traumatized? Are you feeling CHANGES in your body? Should i call you a doctor? Should i get you a proctologist to check if something funny is happening in your ass?”
Letting the van come in, let the van inside the house, letting the van come in, there's a van inside the house
Howl’s Moving Castle the book by Diana Wynne Jones is quite an astonishing discovery for me.
I’d only seen Miyazaki’s anime based on it. He is of course a genius in his own right but that movies pales in comparison. The actions, motivations and the origin of the character’s problems just make so much more sense in the book and are so much more relatable.
I picked it up out of boredom and haven’t regretted it. What a pleasant surprise.
