Ok all. Have a question for ya. How many of you own a hybrid or full electric car? Reason I ask is after yesterdays repair on my 2011 VW Tiguan I'm ready to move on from it I had insurance that took care of most repairs but expired when loan was paid off and it's nickel and diming now so not worth to keep. I know the fuel efficiency benefits and better for environment. But my biggest concern is I live in central NY and it gets cold! Do they deal with cold well?
@evamarie that's my thinking too and with my luck if I went full electric that's exactly would happen 🤣 I have a penchant for finding obscure places 😂
@Timmah1979 depends on the car & its battery.
i live in 🇨🇦 & peeps all around me have been testing for this. in alberta in particular where it can get to -40 & colder w/ the windchill.
battery doesn't seem to do great in temps of -20 & colder. needs charging sooner. & some cars do better than others in the cold.
but if you're driving in -20 or warmer, you should be fine for most cars. check the reviews & battery performance in the cold.
w/ the hybrids, i've heard no issues.
@singlemaltgirl right now I'm looking a Hyundai Tucson. I had a Santa Fe and loved it. But the Santa fes are a bit out of my price range lol. Tucson kinda reminds me of it (just more reasonably priced) it's a hybrid and not full electric. I'm still looking but I think that will be the winner. I don't think I'll buy another VW though. It spent more time getting repaired then on the road
@Timmah1979 that is the problem w/ the european imports. i like them but the repair costs kill you.
i'd like suby to come up w/ a great ev. i love their cars, mileage, & they're like a tank on snow & ice. but they're behind.
i would look at consumer reviews. & buy the latest model you can get b/c battery improvements are happening all the time.
@singlemaltgirl I looked at a Ford escape but quickly changed my mind after seeing the horror stories with the one I was looking at. I'm like no thanks lol

and the tesla's cost a mint to fix, too.
hyundai, kia, & toyota have all invested heavily in r&d for evs and hybrids and they build them for north american markets. relatively fast charge times & don't cost an arm & a leg for repairs.
@singlemaltgirl the Tucson was 25k for a 2022. My bank pre-approv for 24. So it's def gonna have to stay on road more. I tend to go after cars 10+ years old but I'm like I need a car to last me 10 years. That would be swell lol
@Timmah1979 oh, i've never bought a new car & never regretted it. the depreciation kills me.
2022 sounds decent for battery innovation & so on.
my car is a toyota from 2011. it runs great. my next car will be an ev or hybrid but i don't live in as cold a climate & we have lots of charging stations here. but i hope my car lasts me at least another 5 yrs. it was new to me in 2019.
@singlemaltgirl I would absolutely love a rav 4. But cheapest one around me is close to 37k. And I'm still saving up for a decent house so it's like. Nope I'll get something close to what I'm looking for and won't mind being married to for next 7 years. If I had unlimited funds I know exactly what id get 😂

@singlemaltgirl but yea every car I've owned has been at a min 7-10 years old before I got my hands on it. So I'm like lemme invest in something current and hopefully only had one owner other than me

I drive a Prius hybrid which definitely gets worse MPG on cold days (and winters are mild here) but I still wish I'd bought one years earlier. I probably would have if manufacturers and dealers were better at telling people what the difference is instead of trying to impress with sound systems and futuristic headlights.
@Timmah1979 I would get a hybrid. It is still a charging station nightmare out there. Unless they bring back the VW bug make it electric and call it lightning bug.
@Ruthat don't get me wrong when the Tiguan is on the road it's runs fantastic, minus the 3 times it died out on the thruway and was about 2500 in repairs each time . Luckily the insurance I had covered it. But same issue 3x. Plus I replaced a sensor last year same sensor this year. I'm like lemme trade it in to get something rather than dying and sending it to junkyard

Hybrids do ok in the cold. EV's aren't quite there yet, unfortunately.
@Timmah1979 I have kids who own hybrid cars in Duluth and Minneapolis. They do fine. They are in a garage at night not left out. But they love them. I also have kids in Vegas that drive a hybrid and they also love it and it's been driven through the desert at 115 ° F

I had an all electric Nissan Leaf when I lived in Hawaii, so I never had any cold weather. I would love to get an electric vehicle now but would get a plug-in hybrid. There are times I need to make a long road trip and I want the peace of mind not to have to find a charging station.
