It's that awkward intersection between languages, where Spanish uses gendered words for all kinds of things that have no gender whatsoever, whereas in English, if the word for table is feminine, then g-dammit, it's a female table.
I suspect having a masculine word cover both genders of humans doesn't rub Spanish speaking people as much the wrong way as it does in English.

I see where you're coming from, and you're correct. But banning words is on the path to fascism, and banning this specific word makes people who are non-binary less visible. If people don't like the term, they don't have to use it. 🤷🏻♂️
But those who do, make those marginalized groups more visible.
