The Church still claims D&D is a gateway to The Occult; However, in recent years as attempts to reboot the D&D moral panic have fizzled out, they have replaced D&D with Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Vampire: The Masquerade, the Goth subculture (Which I am a card-carrying member of), Tarot Cards, Divination, Ouija Boards, Paganism, and just about anything else they think is detrimental to "Family Values".

Created in 1974 by Gary Gygax & Dave Arneson, based on their love for miniature military wargames, set in a fantasy world, quickly became the scapegoat of Fundamentalist Christians, who argued that the ability to cast spells & use magic in the game was a gateway to getting into the occult. WOW!
In the 1980s, a Moral Panic surrounding D&D & it's debunked links to murders & suicides fueled the controversy after the suicide of James Dallas Egbert III.

Gary Gygax debunked the claim that the game was possessed, among other alse claims by saying "Somebody said they threw their copy of Dungeons and Dragons into the fire, and it screamed. It’s a game! The magic spells in it are as real as the gold. Try retiring on that stuff."
