Honestly, I don't think we should be tough on crime. I've never seen it work. I think we should be reasonable and frankly honest about crime, responding to its causes in the most effective ways possible so that we can have less crime.
The hammer doesn't seem to do anything but send shrapnel damage in every direction.

Entirely agree.
What actually works to lower crime seems to be reducing poverty and increasing social supports. (Also works to reduce addiction, which also reduces crime.)
