My good artist friend, Scott Woods, also a librarian.. is an Emmy winning Poet/Griot who had an amazing piece about this on Facebook.. and I WILL be there to see what they both have to say soon.

2. I began at the library as a roving "page" tasked with cleaning up and reshelving. So I visited all the branches in the county.. city and suburban.. and the difference of respect/expectations was radically different.. with the structure favoring the "norms.." of the segregated suburbs. This is a much bigger issue than libraries/librarians can handle, and I know his pain.

1. Here is my take on this. As a brown ovaried librarian in the 90's/00's.. (now retired) I can testify to the additional expectations placed on the "other.." The whole library system here was NOT diverse, and was staunchly stiffly whitemale oriented .. I experienced hostility from staff as well as customers over "cultural norms" being "violated.." Even though I had a degree from one of the most conservative universities in the state.

I'm headed to a memorial service today to celebrate the life of a good human who could not handle the demons any longer. If you are experiencing hopelessness, please use every resource available in this world to find help. You are worth saving♥️

The challenge is to choose 20 albums that greatly influenced my taste in music. One album per day, for 20 consecutive days. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. (Unless you ask...)
Day 1

Good morning, CoSo!

Some people think that their ideas, or the ideas that have been put into their heads, are the only ones that are true and valuable and count; other ideas are bad, dangerous, and satanic.

And when they see that their own ideas aren't all that persuasive, their solution is to make sure that alternative ideas don't even get heard by other people, because they might be converted to them.

Such a person can only offer the most insincere lip service to the notion of free speech.

Today's is Vera Lynn's "We'll meet again" from 1939. "The Forces' Sweetheart," She recorded this with one of the first polyphonic synthesizers.
Lynn lived to 103, & performed at London's VE-Day concert in 2005.
Enjoy the hopeful melancholy.

... Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That as I saw you go
You were singing this song
We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.

Remember that librarians present materials, programming, and answers that do not discriminate; that preserve freedoms and serve the community.
Chase us away, and you lose democracy in information. It's that serious.

This post is a deviation from expected archival material.
I am a librarian, and believe in the freedom to read and research. I also believe that librarians have the right to do their jobs without being bullied or threatened.
I am so very sad to report that Mychal Threets -- one of the best librarians I know -- has suffered so much social media and other bullying that he cannot do his job, and is leaving the library field.

Good Monday morning!
Its 34 F, heading for a partly cloudy 65 F -- warm for February. Rain moving in tomorrow.
There will be no leftover corned beef, unfortunately, as something got into it in the outdoor fridge. Never had that happen before.
That's weather and the non-menu from the ancient Blue Ridge of Virginia
Go out there and make it a kind day.

Good morning, @Minholkin. Got my sunflower seeds in the mail; now if I can keep the deer out of them to grow beyond sprouts.
