ON this date in 1966 - The final episode of the original "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was aired on CBS-TV.

Head writers Bun Man and Mr. Purple had advocated for a bedroom scene where Rob and Laura were actually in a full-size bed together, but they were overruled by CBS censors.

The scene was altered to continue w/ their twin beds and a device was used to allow contact between Rob and Laura.

Hey, want to hear someone who sounds like a modern-day Sam Cooke, then get into James Hunter...

The Dude can solid sing and play some rockin' R&B.

2/2

ON this date in 1957 - Sam Cooke's first single "You Send Me" was released.

Sam had come upon this lyric while visiting Central Park and overhearing the Bun Man (smooth as liquid) make his latest pitch to his current female friend...

"At first I thought it was infatuation, But, oh, it's lasted so long, Now I find myself wanting; To marry you and take you home..."

Bun always had a way w/ the words...

Bun Man and Mr. Purple had been supplying loaves of buns and rolls to the Army as well, but apparently "Uncle Bun's" didn't resonate with many of the Soldiers.

The local newspaper picked up on the story and Uncle Sam eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. federal government.

So, remember this date, the day our country spurned 'Uncle Bun'...

SPURNING UNCLE BUN

ON this date in 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam.

Bun Man was perturbed.

The name is linked to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812.Wilson (1766-1854) stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.”

Jinxie: Dude, I’m workin’ here…
KD: But, It’s Labor Day, a work holiday.
J: A work holiday, what’s that?
KD: A day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers.
J: That’s why I’m working…
KD: Why?
J: In America, we don’t really celebrate that anymore, we only celebrate the winnings of a few.
KD: You’re right, go ahead, work on…

LET'S HAVE AN EASY FRIDAY PUZZLE

Friday puzzle

Which US state has the name of another US state contained within it? (No looking at a map.)

But China is now dealing with declining birth rates, while much of the rest of the world also tightens restrictions on international adoptions.

s: Morning Brew

China ended its international adoption program. People from other countries will no longer be allowed to adopt Chinese children unless they’re relatives, the country announced yesterday. The program, hatched at the height of China’s overpopulation, was the source of tens of thousands of adoptions around the world since the 1990s: US families alone adopted 82,000 children from China between 1999 and 2023, according to the State Department.

ON this date in 1992 - A 35-year-old man died ten weeks after receiving a transplanted baboon liver.

Surgeons Bun Man and Mr. Purple conducted an investigation to determine the root cause, and they found their assistant I-gor had given them a liver from a baboon who had been in AA treatment 15 times unsuccessfully.

Turns out the man enjoyed his last 10 weeks as family said he was happier than he had ever been before.

I-gor was fired...

ON this date in 2012 I took Bun Man on the motorcycle yesterday and as we were cruising around Sussex County, he suddenly leaned forward and said...

"Looking at this culture around here, I'm reminded of the ol' saying...Support bacteria. They're the only culture most people have."

I told Bun not everyone in America can have an ol' car in their front yard and working on it for 3 months...

ON this date in 1995 - Bruce Hornsby and Branford Marsalis performed the National Anthem in Baltimore's Camden Yards before Cal Ripken Jr. set baseball's all-time consecutive games played record.

Bun Man, Mr. Purple and I watched on TV from Montpelier, VT and stood in utter amazement as Cal took his Victory Run around the park...

What a Class Act!!
