If you only know one thing about me, it's that I LOVE RECORDING NIGHT!!!

Super-sized double-stuf XXXL wide-load episode of Let's Play Ten dropping in two days.

I was way too absorbed to take any video - but Flaming Lips put on a freaking seminar last night on how to entertain an audience (they always do). This was the 4th time I've seen them and the best performance I've seen them put on, and the longest. Wayne's voice held out all night, the set list was amazing, the band was super tight and the crowd was all in. What a great show.

Apparently I have two "go-to" critiques of lead singers:
1. I love the way they deliver the lyrics
2. They sound like someone taking a hard shit in a gas station rest room

🎧 The Mysterines, "Afraid of Tomorrows". One of my most anticipated 2024 releases. Lia Metcalfe is a tough chick with "don't fuck with me" vibes to spare. But on the band's second full length she's showing some cracks in the armor, and the music reflects that - there's a wider spectrum of moods here. The brashness of their early singles is still in there, but this is a more experienced Mysterines, painting with a bigger brush and more colors.

🎧 Alice Coltrane, "The Carnegie Hall Concert". Recorded in 1971 fresh off the release of her landmark "Journey...." LP, Coltrane brought a double trio including Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders for a free jazz/skronk master class. Four extended workouts, two of them written by her late husband, ebb and flow and explode. Sanders might have invented some new notes at this show. Just released on Impulse after 50 years on the shelf. A must.

🎧 Girl Scout, “I Just Needed You To Know”. Right now after my 5th spin of GS’ new single I feel I have reached the end of music. A song that starts with its accelerator on the floor, then hits the nozz for a super nova moment that is destructive and beautiful all at once. And then they do it all again but with more menace, eventually breaking the tension with a dissonant noise rock guitar solo. Fucking shit what a great song. Walk do not run. Now.

🎧 Budge, "Hrtstrngs EP". Fast and fuzzy choruses melt into waves of bobbing middle-eights on the debut EP from this Nashville indie-rock band. Worth a listen. It's a

These “expert” lists always crack me up. I think they are oppressive. But I can’t recall ever seeing a “top 100” album list, even one that crossed genres, that omitted Sgt. Pepper.

🎧 Crumb, "Amama". It's Saturday night, the lights are low, maybe you're a little...altered....the vibe is undoubtedly chill. Oh, and you might be in a spaceship hovering over Earth. That's when you put this album on. Or...anytime really.

Hey gang it's a so check your curated playlists, explore your streaming service, check bandcamp, ask your pals. You might hear something life altering today.

🎧 Maita, "Best Wishes". New-to-me Portland OR based artist. Maria Maita-Keppeler writes songs that i can only describe as "extremely cool". She's got a beguiling voice, and she's got a flair for noir Americana. I've been digging in to her back catalog and it's all great. New album dropping in July. Good stuff.

When the Scottish band "The Joy Hotel" becomes the biggest band in the world, remember you heard it here first. If they don't...well...they're still one of the best bands I've ever heard.

🎧 Snarls, "With Love". Seriously, head over to Snarls' bandcamp page and purchase this album (available in multiple formats). These kids from Chicago went to Norway, to a remote town, with a great producer (Chris Walla) and came back with an alt-indie pop masterpiece. Yeah, it's that good. Don't question me. I've been watching this band for years and I consider this a reward.

🎧 Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, "Bird and Diz". My 15yo watched "Whiplash" a few days ago and wanted to hear jazz that sounded "less like the music from a tv cop show". I suggested he start with Charlie Parker, and he's been listening to "The Savoy/Dial Master Takes". This is my next rec to him - a Verve session from 1950 with Buddy on drums and Monk on piano. It's only 20 minutes, but it is seriously hot shit.

Episode 35, "1..2..3..PODCAST!"

🎧 Pearl Jam, "Dark Matter". It's a Pearl Jam album. It rocks, the drums are criminally over processed, Stone's riffs are still driving the bus, and Eddie gets his introspective moments. Their last....five? albums are interchangeable. But the fact that they are still standing after 30+ years with 4/5 of the original band, and with their integrity mostly intact is good enough for me. They are a familiar and welcome friend.
