🎧 Dickey Betts & Great Southern, "Live at Birdy's Aug 12 2003". This was the first show in Indianapolis. 7 guys guys and all that gear on a stage meant for a band half that size. One of the drum kits was pretty much teetering off the edge of the stage. After they walked on, Dan Toler says “stage is a little small” and Dickey says “well Dan you know we’re just gonna have to stand here and give it hell”. My brother got a tape of the show and sent it to me. 😔 Thanks, Dickey.

🎧 Orchard Keepers, "The Moon Stares Back". Ayannah Miller has been fronting some version of Orchard Keepers since 2013. They started out as a folk-noir trio. One night in 2014 they walked on stage as a full throated punk band, with Miller slashing away at her guitar and sounding like a young Patti Smith. Over a decade later OK is still releasing albums on the regular. This new one is a raucous, sexy, grimy ride. (I know these people personally).

Anybody remember the great "Threatin" hoax from 2018? This guy faked everything, his label, his following, his management, his agent, and he eventually duped his band into a manufactured sold out British tour. After 6 years, he finally breaks his silence. I was fascinated by this story.

🎧 English Teacher, “This Could Be Texas”. Two words: Holy. Fucking. Shit. Already in the running for my album of the year. The title track alone, with its walk thru the heather verses and arpeggio-laden mid section makes the whole album “good.” But the rest of the songs make it great. Lily Fontaine is one of the UKs best lyricists and her lithe voice sets her apart from most her “post-punk” contemporaries. Trust me. Your ears will thank you.

It's a and I have no meetings on the calendar! I've got the morning playlist loaded with new releases from:
-Blue Oyster Cult
-Bodega
-English Teacher
-Orchard Keepers
What are the 'nauts going to be rockng today?

🎧 Another Sky, "Beach Day". Driven by Catrin Vincent's VERY unique, genderless voice, Another Sky creates gigantic cinematic neo-prog rock songs that go from sheer sonic beauty to all out violence (this band can and does rock out - just listen to "Uh-Oh" or "Psychopath"). Recorded in a literal crypt, it feels at times that the songs are exploding out of the ground. Highly recommended.

Dropped E34 "Xtop What You're Doing¿" of the "LETS PLAY TEN" podcast this morning. If you're looking for some new under the radar rock and roll give it a listen. 10 newly released tracks from some killer bands. Plus, me and Ben consider the "Cowboy Carter Effect". You can find us on all services or at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten

Thanks in advance for checking us out!

🎧 Gustaf, "Package Pt. 2". Been waiting a few weeks for this one to drop and today it did. Art-punk is making a huge comeback in NYC (Bodega is another great band). I adore this band's approach, the way they figured out to use a creepy harmonized backing vocal as part of their sound, the angular riffs and semi-spoken lyrics. It all comes together as an part-punk party. A new favorite for sure.

🎧 Skeleton Key, “Gravity Is The Enemy”. Fairly obscure NYC art-rock quartet helmed by former Lounge Lizard Erik Sanko. They released three albums between 1997 and 2012, this being the last. Imagine if Adrian Belew had taken over the 90s version of King Crimson completely without Fripp and took half of Pat Mastelloto’s kit away That’s pretty much what SK sounds like, with more menace. Highly recommended.

Cosonaut @Mandypar just posted as part of the 20for20 their very first owned vinyl. What was yours?

My grandfather, who had no knowledge at all of western music, much less what a 6 year old might want to listen to, gave me this for my birthday in 1972. I just saw it on ebay for $17 and I may buy it just to have that memory back.

🎧 Rush, "Caress of Steel" I'm reading Geddy Lee's book so I am in RUSH mode. Been watching some vids from the tours I missed (2007 was the last time I saw them) so feeling a little nostalgic. This was the album that almost ended the band but of course with 50 years of retrospect its pretty clear where they were going and how they were gonna get there. It's a very listenable album, with Peart's mid-70's lyrics coming to the fore.

🎧 irossa, "Satura". Post-rock/art-punk from Turin, Italy (lyrics in Italian). I may be obsessed with this album for a while. A little bit Black Country New Road meets Teenage Riot. Just a fantastic record, their first full length.

🎧 Rosie Tucker, “Utopia Now!” RT’s debut full length “Sucker Supreme” set a pretty high bar. And after experimenting with “tiny songs”, Rosie is back with an LP of “erudite love songs for good times and end times”. It’s an album full of great and fun songs, beautifully packaged, pressed on blood red vinyl and mastered at 45rpm. Weird but not surprising that indie radio hasn’t picked them up yet.
